Anyway we hastily agreed assuming that I would be able to get some kind of work while I was here. So one year later and I'm still jobless, we're getting by on here salary but it's been a source of contention and also something that's been getting me down as well.

I've also blown throw my meagre savings so I have no money of my own at the moment. I've heard and read that it's difficult for people in my position to find work especially when they don't have a dregree. I've spent many years as a struggling musician so mywork history is a bit patchy and my CV/Resume is pretty lame.

At the moment my only other option would be to return home for a few months so I could take a temp job and then return to see out the rest of her contract which runs till summer 2009.

So any ideas?

Go home and make some money then save a couple of months and declare the cash and take it through customs. (Better rate).

Or

Try and get work on the oil rigs around Malaysia or even Eastern Russia. You dont need a degree for most jobs and a few white lies will get you employment. There are all sorts of jobs available there.

If you're stuck here, why not get some university credits online toward your own teaching dgree or something else. It might not help your revenue stream right now, but in the future it sure will.

You are getting by on your wife's salary - so money isn't the problem (of course we could all do with more)

Is the source of contention your pride, or your Mrs being tired of you being idle? Are you pulling your weight around the house/garden etc.?

Maybe if you look for some unpaid voluntary work you could break the cycle. Firstly, it would get you out of the house and give you something to talk about with Mrs Lazyfarang2. Secondly, it might gain you some useful contacts in the community - the sort of people who might be able to offer you a paid job (if they can see that you are genuine and willing to work). Anyway, it couldn't do you any harm.

Very inciteful reply. I've already contatcted Amnesty International in Thialand about volunteer work so I'll have to wait and see how that goes but thanks for the advice.

Last rig I was on they had just taken on an ex chip shop fryer, a P.E teacher, and a musician on the drill floor.

i think the name lazyfarang is quite apt, OP. there are loads of things you can do to make cash in LOS. go be an extra for film and television for about 1500 baht per day. do some english teaching. make a blog and do affiliate marketing. be creative and you'll think of something.

Yup I have an idea: the old (middle aged?) Thai lady who organises the foreign musicians working at the Imperial (off Sukhumvit) specialises in arranging work visas and jobs for professional foreign musicians. I don't know her personaly but I do know someone who know her very well (Russian musician in Bangkok). Speak to the musicians who work there in the evenings and see if you can find out how to contact her.

But the money is usually pretty good and tax free.

I'm in the Royal Navy but leaving soon, work on Nuclear Submarines so was looking at going for either Nuclear Power Stations or Oil Rigs. Checked out a few jobs and had some good feedback from careers fares, one offered $700 dollars tax free per day! ... errr, but it was in Eastern Russia and you had to be fluent in Russian.

A friend of mine was offered one in Thailand for £10 000 after tax per month.

I suppose it doesn't really matter where you work on a rig, you'll still be 2 weeks on and 3 weeks off or whatever cycle you work now but in your time off you could easily make it to Thailand. Obviously Malaysia is good as its only an hour or two away and hence flights are cheaper.

I dont really know much about Malaysian Rigs really other than that apparently they are really desperate right now and are paying salaries up to six months in advance to secure their employment. Dont know why though. Source was actually my Dads girlfriends sisters boyfriend. A bit of a mouthful but to her I suppose its just Dave... Anyway seemed pretty genuine.

Also knew a guy called Garry in Phuket, he might be on here, was from Plymouth but now works on a rig doing some kind of safety equipment maintainer, he used to be a bouncer and then a policeman, or vica versa... lol
