maybe best to close this thread now

as mentioned before i did not intend to offend anyone, and in my personal view i did not find it that racist, more comical due to the truth behind it.

Thread deleted per OP's request.

Well, it has been enlightening, and thanks for the photo Suegha, been peeking into my bedroom windows again? :o

Anyway, despite the digression into a discussion of the actual post rather than the ability of members to self moderate, it gives me alot of faith that you can deal with these issues in a non-aggressive manner. Even if some offer hyperbole as an argument, the general discussion has been, thankfully, reasonable, intelligent and enlightening.

BTW - How do you embed a picture in a post without using an attachment file?

Read this topic.

Thanx man. :D

Yeh nice one. I had been wondering.. :D

This guy keeps digging holes for himself, flush them out once and for all!

OK, not the best of retorts, but he has stated he did not want to offend anyone, so lets take that at face value and he has publicly apologised, you have also made your views known, as have many others, why don't we all move on.

agree :D

Yes agreed. :D

I do my best.. now, about that sub-forum... :(

Anyway, despite the digression into a discussion of the actual post rather than the ability of members to self moderate,

That can be one and the same thing

Why not start a new thread checking to see the interest?

I have a long lens well focused! :D

ahem...

You know....

You know what, never mind. What I am thinking probably can't be said out loud anyway :D

By consensus it was disagreed with, do you want further censorship limited free speech?

Not at the moment, I'm quite happy that the racist has withdrawn the offending post.

Thanks for your concern.

thats a bit strong Harry, so will you be calling all the people who post jokes about women ' Sexist ' or how about the wisecracks over the irish and the germans, will you be calling them racist as well?, as it is the same?.........

Please keep you personal comments to yourself,

The only possible outcome to this nonsense. The racist has quite correctly agreed to remove his racist post and hopefully we will have no further racist posts from him or indeed others.

It clearly shows not just with the OP but the supporters of his post what sort of quality of person is actually moving / attracted to Thailand these days. A disgrace.

You ask me two questions then tell me to keep my comments to myself, make your mind up please.

Before you start accusing people of being a racist, please take time to look at the True meaning of a racist, which i am NOT, i think Harry and Dakka are far to PC....

Racism, by its simplest definition, is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. People with racist beliefs might hate certain groups of people according to their racial groups. In the case of institutional racism, certain racial groups may be denied rights or benefits, or get preferential treatment. Racial discrimination typically points out taxonomic differences between different groups of people, even though anybody can be racialised, independently of their somatic differences. According to the United Nations conventions, there is no distinction between the term racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination.

As you can see the OP was around humour and not hate,

thanks

PS - Forum Rules forbid Flaming of other members

Hey, you did the right thing, congratulate yourself and learn.

As far as I'm concerned, case closed for now.

I actually find comments like these far more offensive than the topic at hand. At face value it indicates a level of bigotry.

Would you two guys have wandered into Bedlam if you couldn't have found a reason to insult someone?

Would you two guys have wandered into Bedlam if you couldn't have found a reason to insult someone?

I don't understand the question.

Would you two guys have wandered into Bedlam if you couldn't have found a reason to insult someone?

:D

Harry & Dekka, it is just as offensive & condescending to use the term "the racist" rather than someones username so I suggest your little tag team take a time out.

Boater has apologied for the poem (which btw I received myself from one of my collegeues in Bangalore, where a lot of my company has outsourced to, so I shall be sure to let Prashant know that he is a racist too) so this little witchhunt can be stopped now.

And some posters wonder why we need a little moderation in bedlam :o

Sorry, is that a warning?

At the moment, only another poster who see's no reason for you & dekka to have taken such a vicious attitude towards boater.

The point of this thread was too ask if bedlam members are able to self moderate or moderate someone who they think is being wrong. Lots of posters pulled boater up on his topic & he made apologies & requested removal of the topic. But now, you & dekka seem to have taken it a step too far. What could & should have been done & dusted is still an issue & you are both now doing what you told boater off for, using derogatory terms & offensive name calling.

hang on here who posted the racist poem.....someone who distributes electronically or otherwise racist material....i believe is worthy of the title of racist.. simple fact..

end of story from me. Ill stand by it anyone who distributes racist material is a racist..why is this statement incorrect?

<deleted>, the first time I have ever sworn on TV!!

I suggest you re-read this thread from post 1, if nothing else you might gather some insight into the inner workings of a far more diverse thought process.

Then there is no point carrying on your point is there? You have said your bit, it has been noted & has had some results but if you are unable to see that using term "the racist" rather than a persons name is rude & offensive then there is no point trying to explain it. Good luck to you.

On the BBC, a Nigerian with 94 wives warns others not to do the same..........racist? sexist?..........helpful?

And some posters wonder why we need a little moderation in bedlam :o

Like any other forum, Bedlam needs a degree of moderation as well, or it would truly live up to it's title.

I don't think I've ever seen a place (forum/board/etc) that was able to "self-moderate" successfully. There are just too many people, mostly anonymous, often feeling empowered by that anonymity, that will seek opportunities to bend, twist and outright break the rules, regardless if they are written or unspoken.

Give them an inch and they will take a mile as the old saying goes (more or less).

I've been jetting about the world recently and missed the poem that started this controversy. It wasn't the first controversial topic here and won't be the last.

If I see something that appears to be blatantly offensive or a definite violation of the rules, I'll report it and let the mods sort it out if someone else doesn't beat me to it first. A lot of people though will give life to it by continuously posting to it, and depending on how controversial the subject at hand is, invariably it turns into a flame war.

Bedlam allows a greater degree of latitude towards topics and posts than other threads as we know, but there still has to be some control. I've commented in other threads about the way things used to be (i.e. when you'd look at the current topics and 15 out of 20 would be about US politics), and personally would not like to see Bedlam return to the state it used to be in.

There are hundreds of forums out there where various subjects can be posted and discussed. If I really wanted to see what ever crap is on the front page of the Sun/Mirror/Star, I can go to those sites and read it. If I want to get involved in discussions on Euro politics, I'll look for sites that focus on those issues. If I want news or related information about my home country, I'll find sites that specialize in that.

If I want to look at Thailand related issues/topics, I come to ThaiVisa.

I think that is the same for most people here. Bedlam allows a little more freedom to post stuff that isn't specifically Thai-related, but I don't think it was meant to be a place to post any and everything from whatever country you originated from.

The membership of TV overall seems to be predominately western (English-speaking) ex-pats, and quite frankly, I think most of them couldn't give a rat's ass about the goings on in someone else's country, and if they really did have an urge to see the latest gossip on Obama or HRH or whoever, they wouldn't go looking for it on a site that is primarily Thai related. We don't need special "UK/USA/Australia/Swedish/Canadian/German/etc" sub forums either, as there are already entire websites set up for those. This isn't the "WeAreTheWorldVisa" site, it is the ThaiVisa site.

I think we are lucky in that generally, Bedlam doesn't require the same level of moderation that the other forums do, but there still has to be some level of control or the little problems (like we've just seen in this thread) would get out of hand. In fact, this thread alone shows the need for moderation in Bedlam, and the inability of the members to "self-moderate".

On another note, one should remember that Freedom is never Free. Free Speech is just an expression, and I don't think there is a country or society out there that truly allows "Free Speech". There is always censorship of some kind. Be glad for that and think about the fact that no matter what your race/religion/gender or sexual preferences are, there are people out there that don't like you, for whatever reason. Without censorship (and things like Hate Crime laws), those people would be free to (verbally) attack everything that you hold dear. Without moderation (and a degree of censorship) this site, and others like it, would degenerate into nothing but hate-filled flame fests, and most people would just leave and never come back.

The inmates can't run the asylum. They've proven that in the past. They've proven that in the present. They will prove that in the future.

My grandfather, an Irishman, used to work as a laborer, when he was sober, for a Scotsman homebuilder, who went by the moniker of "One Nail MacGregor". Now it might be wrong to draw a conclusion that the Irish like a drink, and the Scottish are cheap from just that one sentence, but on the other hand you wouldn't be far wrong either.

On the BBC, a Nigerian with 94 wives warns others not to do the same..........racist? sexist?..........helpful?

Humanitarian springs to mind.

Getta life people.

That poem, variations of it have been around 130 years or more.

It is TRUE in every aspect, it is not racist, except for the small minded PC brigade.

Geeeeeeeeez, let it die.

So why did you bring it back up Pete? :D

Yours truly :D

Kan Win :D

P.S. Please do not answer this post :o

Wot post?

Ken.

I am trying to remember who I am bringing Kiwifruit wine to have a glugg with.

My alzheimers..........

And some posters wonder why we need a little moderation in bedlam :o

And I still firmly believe in self-moderation as a rule, not a blind faith.

Even the House of Commons has a 'Speaker'.

However, this was being suitably controlled until certain posters could not see beyond the end of their noses, the very large majority expressed their reasoning and even tried reason in place of antagonism, this can only work among reasonable people.

Self-moderation is the rule, a little official moderation, it would appear will always be neccessary.

Masochistic was the first word I thought of.

Edit..... <deleted> it. Can't be bothered to get into a ruck with the pc brigade.

Interesting turn around. We were all patting ourselves on the back about the fact that the topic was being dealt with reasonably maturely, and then it degenerated. Pity.

A curveball from the leftfield that could start a whole new debate, that's what Bedlam is for. :o
