On another topic, the idea of an alien ID was raised for those of here on long term non-immigrant visas.

I think it's a great idea. I suppose they would have to be renewed annually upon visa extensions.

Do you welcome this, or not?

it would be a good ID, japan is using this system since a long time but only if they decide a day that the driving license can't be used anymore like this.

My Thai driving license works fine.

OK for those who drive here. Not everyone does.

Of course, this has nothing to do with us, whether they issue these or not.

If it ever happens, it will be an immigration scheme to keep even better control of us pesky aliens.

i think it would be fine ,every little helps here

I find my Driving Licence helps

But it will expire on my 70th Birthday - about 6 months away ...

Maybe off topic - but as many have already mentioned Driving Licence ...

What happens when you reach 70?

Can you get another one - maybe after getting a Medical Cert?

Has anybody got the experience?

Well, here is one design concept for the Alien ID card.

Would be good, but only if you can use it to exit and re-enter without stamps in your passport, similar to the card you get in Singapore. Otherwise, what is the point? Resident fees at National Parks?

We are legally required to carry passports at all times. Most of us don't but technically we can be arrested at any time if we can't produce our passport. The card would replace that requirement ... hopefully!

BTW, if you don't believe me, there was a case a few weeks ago about a bunch of farangs in a Pattaya nightclub being arrested for just that "crime", failure to produce an ORIGINAL passport (copies not always accepted).

The Alien ID card could be work fine,

If, 1) A very exclusif check by immigration. background - History (criminal)

2) If there is no history or background for dieneing,,

3) a year visa at normall prices availlable at your nearest Immigration.

Yes , that would be splended.

It would depend on the price and hassle involved. If it came as a standard part of the Non-Imm O extension process at a nominal fee, say up to 100 Baht, then fine. But if they would ask for 1000 Baht++ for it, and tie us up in yet more hoops of red tape and paperwork, then it would not be fine. So until I know more, I can't decide.
