She Wore An Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini…

Featured Replies

An interesting and thought provoking blog on women's sporting costumes.

She wore an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini…to work.

I REALLY MUST stop expecting so much from the Powers That Be. Such wide eyed naivete only leads to disappointment and a breaking of the spirit.

It’s not just that the world we live in is consistently underpinned by an imbalance of power between all manner of people. And specifically, it’s not that the objectification of women is anything new or unsurprising. I know that women’s bodies are public property and the approval given to us by salivating audiences is supposed to be something we’re grateful for.

It’s just that I would have expected things to be different in an international sporting event that celebrates elite athletes; a conglomeration of people the world over who’ve trained endlessly to become the best in the world, who’ve devoted thousands of hours to plugging away and competing in order to achieve something that, yes, is entirely about their bodies but has nothing to do with their gender or sexuality.

Unfortunately, I was wrong.

While male athletes are essentially allowed to go about their business being ‘fierce’ and ‘crazy-fit’, female athletes bear the burden of not just having to be elite but having to look good while doing it. Don’t believe me? Let’s have a little looksie at the disparities on the Olympic playing field..

Vive la difference.

It's not quite right though is it.

I suppose it's one way of increasing the crowd as well.

I'm sure if they didn't want to wear it then they would soon protest.

Beach volleyball is played and practiced outside in the sun, I don't know any women that would want tan lines from shorts halfway down their legs.

Well, I'm not sure, and maybe I'll get the full grunt of the females on this forum, but I believe females to be more exhibissionist than the men.

This opinion comes from a lot of observation on many different beaches. :o:D :D

cheers

I'm an exhibitionist but no one wants to look. :o

Same here, do they cordon off the area for you too J ...... that yellow tape with black writing (in any language) is not very flattering is it :o

Many Thai girls wear such bikinis to work in and around Pattaya.

I thought out of the box was 'serious' - this thread seems less so.

It was meant to be a discussion on different values for men and women in the sporting arena.

It's not my fault Thad went off topic.

Keep up the good work, you're showing the qualities TV looks for in it's moderators. :o

It seems on most sporting events the athletes both male and female are wearing tighter fitting more revealing clothing. In most cases they would say that it improves performance, being more aerodymanic less bits to flap around in the wind, but I don't know, maybe it just reflects modern trends where people just wear less and show more flesh!

Oh goody, so eventually we'll end up with all the athletes competing naked as it used to be in ancient Greece, one draw back, boys only.

The point that Scea was trying to make, and I hope I get this right, is that males just have to be good at what they do, the girls have to do that and look good too, which is a little unfair.

Why else would you watch it? :o

Good point! :D

One of the things I used to read a lot about in Australia was how women's sports never got the same media coverage as men's did.

The media's reply was always along the lines of "when you get 40 to 50,000 people at a women's team sport we'll start televising it along with the football.

Cruel, I suppose, but still true.

State owned TV used to cover a lot of women's and minor sports when they had no responsibility to advertising sponsors, but of course those days are largely disappearing; everyone has to suck at the corporate tit now.

> State owned TV used to cover a lot of women's and minor sports

> when they had no responsibility to advertising sponsors,

I assume that China's media is state owned etc. but their choice to dub the little girl's singing voice with images of a 'prettier' girl is one for a better world image of a beautiful China.

Watching Bloomberg TV (Asia) - I wonder why every female presenter could be considered attractive where as almost every male presenter might best be described as 'professional' or from the ranks of corp. management.

Like weather 'presenters' has there ever been on that fell from the ugly tree?

I'd hardly compare the Chinese media network with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation but John Howard used to say that they were both of the same political inclination. :o

Aussie Rules has a lot of male flesh showing - and tight shorts. Could our Antipodean cousins be turning away from sheep and finding each other?

Edit: Typo

It's not just sports, take those glitterati events like the Oscars. The blokes turn up in DJ's or tux's but the women wear dresses designed to flash as much flesh as is possible without offending anyone. The fact that some flash a bit too much can be put down to overexuberance and accidents :o:D .

What if the blokes turned up in speedos and little else. :D:(

What if the women turned up in Queen Victoria style frocks. :D:D

Would the viewing figures be affected?

No, but it would be fun!

Aussie Rules is a body contact sport where tackling plays a major part. In the days of the old woolen guernseys it was common to see players literally picked up by them and flung a considerable distance. Shorts were also known to be torn off, to the joy of the female spectators.

The tight fitting clothing now worn is to protect against this type of thing.

Aussie rules is a game for real men; no armor plating here and rolling on the ground squealing for a free kick is unknown.

I have heard that some contact with sheep and other men goes on in Rugby League in the Eastern States where many New Zealanders have crossed the Tasman to play in Australia.

While I may may not personally approve I consider what goes on between consenting men and adult sheep is their business.

GAY: the word means "carefree," "happy," or "bright and showy

The simple truth about Aussie Rules is.......

Aussies in Victoria thought rugby was TOO ROUGH, the boys mite get hurt, so OZ Rules was in vented.

Ya not even allowed to tackle properly, ya hafta put ya arms around yer opponent.....cuddle..... them , and only between shoulders and waist, gay game.

No wonder it is called POOFY FOOTY

Apart from that........

"C'mon da SAINTS"

Living in Victoria, ya hafta have a 'team'.

St Kilda were bottom of ladder in 1955 when I arrived from NZ, supported them ever since.

It is not just sniffing they get up to ozzy...

The John Hopoate scandal dragged rugby league down to even greater depths. The talented winger was found guilty of 'unsportsmanlike behaviour' after being caught sticking his fingers up the backsides of opposing players.

in the original Olympics the contestants were all male and all nud_e. I'm glad that has changed. I'm still waiting for the pendulum to swing to the other side. We are getting closer. All woman all nud_e games is in the horizon.
