Registration Of Motor Bike

Depends on Motor Office.

The rule is that must must have Non immigrant visa and paper from immigration stating your address in Thailand.

If you are lucky you can get past the visa issue and even more lucky if you get papers from immigration without along term rental contract.

But go for it, try post in the local forums here on ThaiVisa to see if your motor office is "friendly". :o

Yes you can register a motorcycle in your own name even without a passport.

I just bought two bikes and made the registration using my tabien baan and my drivers

licence as ID, the shop even asked me in which chiangwat I wanted to have the registra-

tion. Regards John.

but i gotta ask if you only got a 30 day why in the world would you register in your own name.

A very good question! :o

I suppose it may depend on where you are, but in Pattaya the answer is definitely YES.

I have two (2) motorcycles legally registered in my name (Honda Phantom and Harley Softail), and all I have is the 30 day stamp.

Why register a bike in my name, if I'm only on a 30 day stamp ? Well, with my current work situation I get three 1 month holidays a year. No need to get a 1 year Visa yet, and as I rarely go back to my home country (3 times in the last 5 years), it's a little difficult to apply for any ways (and there's no Thai embassy in the country I'm working in).

All I needed was a Residency Certificate from Immigration (which means you have to have a proper Thai address of course).

John have you received your registration book already?Your shop must be someone special because the registration office will always need the certificate of residence which only the immigration office can supply for you.

Mr basjke.

The tabien baan is a certificate of residence. And as mentioned in another reply you can also get it from your embassy.

Cheers John.

Mr John,

I know very well what a tabien baan is,but the car registration office will not accept it to register a car because a certificate of origin is a document specially for that purpose. And yes I know that your embassy can provide you with a certificate of origin but that was not the question.

And if you can register a motor vehicle in foreigner name without copy's from your passport as you stated in your previous post than you are a liar or a dreamer.

Mr Basjke!

I understand that you write about your own experience about the use of tabien baan, so can you please elaborate why and where you where denied the use of the book. My only previous experience of it was when I opened some bank accounts. So when I bought the motorcycle I asked in the shop and they told me no problem, same as Thai. When and if I receive the registration book, I will scan it for you to read, I assume you read Thai, don’t trust anybody to translate for you, they can make a mistake. Regards John.

It's good that you write "when and IF I recieve the registration book" because to register the bike in foreigner name you will need to provide the certificate of residence designated for that purpose.Of course you can use your tabien baan to apply for the certificate of residence. Also you will need a copy of your passport and current visa to register in foreign name.

No problem to read the registration book because the owner name,if foreigner,is written in English.

Please keep us updated if you got the registration book without copy's of your passport and certificate of residence.

Yes but while we are all adamant on what the rules are.. We have to remember that the rules are mere guidelines in Thailand..

Some regional offices have different interpretations and some outright bend the rules.. Some dealers may have a inside contact or friendly officer who rubber stamps these things..

I know a buddy had a bike with a messed up book.. As far as we know the book was legit, but a farang had registered it in his missus name.. they had broken up.. She had vanished.. And he then sold the bike with a book, but without the book 'owner' around to sign forms or leave an ID etc.. Then he left the country.. A Thai contact of mine fixed the whole transfer with the old book, a copy of the new owner guys passport, and a 1000 baht note. While that sounds like outright bribery to illegally change a name, I think in this case the price was low because the story was true and the information was passed over and believed as the 'intent' was to correct a paper problem.

As anyone knows you need the current entry stamp on a passport for a farang sale, so that means a farang can never sell the vehicle if they have left the country ?!?!

I like that, the rules are mere guidelines, how true,.this has to be one of the only countries where rules ARE made to be broken, and depending on how big the break will determine the cost of the fix ,. :o Edited by imaneggspurt

I will have the same problem, I am going to buy a new bike. My one year 'O' has just expired, I am working in Singapore so cant get back to the U.K. to get a new one for a while & yes I did try to get a 1 yea visa from the Thai Embassy in Singapore, Failed - No chance. Also I did have all the required paperwork including marriage papers, bank statements, employer letter, Embassy stated as my Singapore workpass was only for one year they would not issue a 1 year visa to me, only visa on offer was 3 month single entry.

A 3 months single entry is still a non imm.. Technically its a non imm they want not necessarily a non imm 1 year...

Fact is a tourist or 30 day might do it..

Mr Basjke!

Why do you refuse to answer my question in letter #16?

Cheers John.

I don't refuse to answer your question, but what do you want me to prove.I have registered the bike you see in my avatar recently, recieved the book 2 weeks ago,and however I have a Tabien Baan and Thai driver license and own a car already in my name,I was simply asked to provide a Certificate of residence which has a recent photo attached and which if I recall correctly mentions the date till when I am allowed to stay in Thailand.

Point is that a Tabien baan IS NOT a certificate of residence as acquired by the motor vehicle registration office.

Are you still confident that you apart from that particular form also didn't need copy's from your passport and current entry stamp?

Hi John, takes quite a while before you post the scan of your green book.Maybe some delay because you didn't provide the proper paperwork?
