My wife has just purchased a new Toyota Commuter van in Buriram. Currently the vehicle has the red and black dealer plates on it. My wifes believes that she can't drive the van between midnite and 0600 with the dealer plates on the vehicle. I asked her who told you this..."I don't know, I just heard it before"

I arrive in BKK next week at 2230, her brother is planning on driving down from Buriram and picking me up; however my wife is now concerned that the police may stop us if after midnite.

Has anyone heard of this...makes no sense to me. But then quite a few things in Thailand make little sense to me...I just take it as it comes. :o

It's true. I have a pair of red plates and the dealer told me the same thing. It has to do with insurance. However, the dealer also gave me an additional piece of paper (insurance) and was told I could drive on this and show it to the police if stopped outside the hours the plates are valid.

Cars with red number plates ( car dealership plates ) are only allowed to drive during daylight hours.

They are also not allowed to drive outside the province where the car dealer is located cq the red plates are registered.

This information is coming from the traffic department Phuket province but should be the same in all provinces.

Well... :o hum...

I don't know anyone who repsect this... it's a stupid law... I have a couple of friends with car leasing and all have red plates... they never had any problem at police roadblocks. So do I, manytimes I drove down to Hua Hin at night, got checked by the local police and I never had any problem with that even if I was outside KTM...

They are more concerned with drug dealers, drunk drivers or illegal Myanmar workers in the back of a 20 years old wreck truck...

:D If it arrived to someone, please report it.

I had red plates 3 times during 4 years and I was driving around country as well

But I paid two times (about 5 years ago) on Sukhumvit Rd. in Bangkok - 200 baht at police station
