Anyone Have A Link To Information On The Thai/japan Free Trade Agreement?

Featured Replies

Okay, from other posts it appears that some sort of free trade agreement will go into effect between Thailand and Japan, with the outcome being that Japanese motorcycles will have a lower tariff. I have heard what people have 'said' is in the agreement, and when it is supposedly coming into effect. Does anyone have an actual link to what the agreement says, and when it actually comes into effect? Sorry, I want to actually know what is going on with it rather than hear different things from different people. Thanks.

And the sentence under the topic should read "fireblade" not "fir". I guess I used too many characters and can't change it by editing. :o

Hi Sub!

I posted a link to the actual agreement some time ago... Let me see if I can find it for you...

Took some digging but I found it!

The implementation of the JTEPA Free Trade Agreement will progresses in stages over the next 9 years! One of the first steps was the elimination of duty on motorcycles with displacement of up to 250cc, hence the timing of the release of the Ninja 250R and D-Tracker 250.

The JTEPA FTA will fundamentally change the way Japanese motorcycles are imported, sold and priced in Thailand.

The import duties are being reduced and will continue to be reduced every year for the next 9 years until they reach zero:

Dates are in Green; Duty is in Yellow

Of course the FTA document is HUGE and no doubt there is plenty of fine print. Here's a link to the actual document in English: JTEPA FTA

The basic agreement is over 900 pages long!

If you can read Thai there is a lot of information on the Honda Bigbike Thailand site that explains how the JTEPA FTA will affect the motorcycle business in Thailand going forward: Honda BigBike JTEPA Page

Hope this information is helpful.

Happy Trails!

I should add that the post above was dated early November. Since that time the Japanese Yen has appreciated significantly which may lead to a net INCREASE in the price of Japanese products despite the reduction in import tariffs... :o

You can also find it in a PDF downloadable from Japanese MoFA website.

It's on page 503 (Tariff Code 87.11).

Sure- you can hope :o

What does Triumph have to do with Japan?
