Question: Process To Renew Bike Registration / Road Tax

Featured Replies

Time to renew my bike's registration and road tax. Planning to go Area 3 office opposite Sukhumvit soi 62/1.

Anybody done this recently ?

Appreciate any info on documents needed and general process i.e. do i need to get insurance etc beforehand or can i obtain all from the LTD office ? Which building / window to report ?

Edit: Bike is 750cc, year 1995 so need to be inspected first ?

Thanks in advance.

MJo

I used to do it all myself and then I changed to using a garage to do it all for me. For just 100 Baht, they do all the running around for you.

Where do you live? I know a very good one in Bangkapi. Look out for the garages/MOT centres that have the yellow cog with Tor Ror Or written in Thai.

Yes you must purchase insurance. They sell it inside the DMV place too.

yes it has to be inspected first, any vehicle over 5 years old.

I'm staying in early sukhumvit. Not much carages around here.

Red Baron has done it to me in the past but was thinking to give it a try myself this time.

Look on Rama 4. Otherwise we have heaps of them out here.

In Udomsuk (Suk 103) have more than one place. Look for the sprocket thing out front. Not far at all from 62 - maybe 5 to 10 mins depending on traffic. They sell insurance too.

Phoned dep of land transport and they "confirmed" you can do the inspection, insurance and tax in one go at DLT.

However the inspection operation in their office was closed, was told i need to go "outside". Tried Sukhumvit 103, saw one appr. 500m to one kilo in right hand side but that was closed as well i think with banner pointing forward and something that looks like new address in Thai? After a u turn found one place in Sukhumvit just after DLT office with the logo. Place looked like nissan maintenance center but they told me they do not handle bikes. However they were nice punch of guys and told me there is one place opposite Sukhumvit soi 101 so off i go. Found the place no probs, roughly opposite soi 101 entrance after the new condo site. Just small shophouse carage and took about 5 mins when they took engine and frame nos and issued the certificate. They did not inspect the bike, just wrote the certificate.

Back to DLT office 2nd floor, insurance done in no time. For tax they had long que, more than 1 hour recon the ladies in the information desk so i went outside and paid in the drive thru booth. Just 15 mins waiting and whole transaction at the booth took less than a minute.

Was fined 7 baht being 6 months late :o Dunno, maybe it's one baht per month or something. Last year was fined 4 baht for being 4 months late and previously it's been 20 baht but then i think i was more than a year late.

Total cost 60 baht for inspection, 100 baht for the annual tax + 7 baht fine and 297 baht for 6 months insurance (only valid until tax expires)

Now when i know where to get the inspection done it will take me propably just one hour to do it next time. Also they told me over phone that they are open every first Saturday of a month so not necessary to take time off from work next time.

I let the office where I buy my 1st class ins. for the pick-up do the bike ins., rego. and inspection. Cost is about 60 baht. How much an hour do you value your time?
