I still have a couple of months left on my Thai license, but wonder how early I can renew it. I will be going back to my home country during the Thai school holidays and my license expires during this time. It is my first license and so only one year, but I want to also get the international license so I can drive in my home country during my stay. Will they do this early too? (I heard that you needed to have a Thai license for at least 1 year before they will provide with an international license).

I was told by the staff in the driving licence office that Thais must renew it as soon as it expires. Foreigners can renew it up to one year after it expires as they know some will be abroad at the time of expiry. I believe that you can not renew before it expires.

I also believe that you cannot use an International Driving Permit in your home country, you must have a driving licence issued by your country. In the UK you can drive using a Thailicence for one year if you move there.

Different countries may have different rules though. Best thing to do is simply ask the relevant departments.

As said, the license must have expired before you can renew it (but only the 1 year licenses). 5 year to 5 year must be done within 90 days before expiration.

Not a 100% sure but i believe when i renewed my 1 year to a 5 year it had to been done with in 1 month of the old ones expiration date.
