I'm going to move to Chiangmai for good, and I wonder if there are websites dedicated to used cars in Chiangmai. www.one2car.com is good but most of the cars are sold in BKK.

cm2car.com cmusedcar.com But i think you will find a trip to BKK more than worthwhile if you don't bring a vehicle with you.

Thanks, Kartman. Didn't quite understand your final sentence, though.

Means cars cheaper in BKK.

Yes indeed. All autos used and even new are a lot cheaper in Bkk. I was near a used car lot in CMai recently and for the fun of it asked the prices of a few cars and trucks. I knew they were expensive, but was totally blown away by the price gouging here: most have a maximum of a 1 month 'warranty' if that. Caveat Emptor :o

Sadly for we Chiang Mai-ans, this is true. More competition in Bkk means lower prices. Same with printing, clothing, plastics and many other things.

My advice (after more than a decade here) is to ignore the 2nd hand car shysters (tho SOME bargains may be found) and talk to Thais who run repair garages. Mech repairs, I mean, NOT bodyworks!

Writing only as a very satisfied customer, I'd say that your first 2 calls should be to the excellent Khun Jimmy (J&N Autos, Old Lamphun Rd), with excellent English, and Khun Daychar (near the old Makro, just north off Superhighway), no English.

Tell them what you are looking for and they will steer you well. Yes, they want your future business on servicing and repairs, but no, they are not majoring as traders. So, as they do want your future business, they are not going to push you into a bum deal, right?

It's a buyers' market and will be for some time. My last little bit of advice, if you really do need to avoid potentially expensive hassles, is to buy something at least 8 years old. Ideally with NO computers, electronic doo-dads, ABS etc etc.

Most of those gadgets are put in there to force you to deal only with the franchised dealer - who has the only diagnostic computer in town. What a shame he doesn't know how to use it!

Caveat emport.

Send me a PM with your e-mail for more if you wish.

Yes I am amazed at the price gauging in CMai in relation to both rentals and buying a car... I have a rental car now for 10K pm from BKK that would be 20K pm in CMai. Or so I was quoted.... They all buy them down in BKK, well most of them. Then expect to make and often do make 40-50% on their purchase price. I thought I was in another country when I went around asking the 2nd hand car prices in CMai.

I said several times that 'you do know this is approx 30-50% of the price I would pay in BKK'. Most of the responses were well get one from BKK- Mai Pen Rai, I will thank you very much I would say in thai........ Wow what a money maker I said. I said they several pw to silly Farangs paying full price and Thai's whom squeeze them down in price. As some of the Thai's know the score- it is amazing how many do not. They treat BKK like another country- some. The owners try not to get too competitive with the other guys whom are THEIR FRIENDS- the dealers. That is sooo sweet...

In saying that why does a Farang or Thai not go buy 50 from a BKK auction, have them sent by truck to Cmail for 25,000bt. Then sell them at approx. 10% after costs. Maybe then it will be half acceptable if a 1 year warranty supplied in Cmai. Sill make a few Mio and crash the CMai dealers in the process.

Even 2nd hand motorbike are marked up in CMai. I can get a 2 year old mio for less than 25K bt in BKK. No hope of even finding one here---if you do typically they want 35K bt. Money to be had in CMai I tells ya- lol.
