In your local area? Chilled and crispy, just waiting to go with some fried whitebait? How much did you pay?

I stopped looking at wine here years ago, it's either naff or way way over-priced for what you get.

I just had a bottle of this:

Carnavalito Pinot Grigio 2007 (can't get the image where I want it!)

Pinot Grigio is the most popular white grape on the planet. The wines from northern Italy are its most sought-after, so demand has helped push up the prices dramatically. More recently this variety has taken off in the New World, but is still grown in comparatively tiny quantities in Australia (around 4% of plantings), Chile and Argentina. In the New World, the wines tend to have a little more weight and roundness than their Italian equivalent, but are all the more satisfying for that.

Carnavalito is from the outback of Argentina's Famatina Valley, in Chilecito country that saw a goldrush in the late 1800s. It is said that about 100 million dollars of gold was shipped to England at that time. Today, this region is much poorer and little grows in the arid soils bar vines. In its dry climate, however, the vines produce very healthy, ripe fruit and with excellent concentration too thanks to long, hot sunny days and a big drop in temperature at night, largely due to the high altitude of the plantings (at about 1,000 metres). Most of the vines are grown organically, partly because the growers simply can't afford the price of spraying them, but also the vineyards are so healthy, there is simply no need.

This crisp, appetising white is the work of the most important cellar of that region - La Riojana - in collaboration with highly experienced Flying Winemaker, Nick Butler, an expert at capturing all the fruity freshness of the wine.

This wine was a stunning example!

Thanks Seugha !!! Wonderful description and info - I shall try to locate a bottle. Should I have put this in 'food' ?

How much did you pay?

How much would be decently priced?

I buy it by the case, not necessarily PG,so couldn't tell individual prices and it is Oxford, they rip us Oxonians off, think we are Londoners. :o

Welcome to Bedlam.

Moss

I was in Tachilek yesterday and spent a few minutes perusing the duty free shop opposite Myanmar immigration.

The selection and prices available almost tempted me to resume drinking.

I still think this is one of the best wine and spirit shops in Thailand.

(OK, OK, I know it's not in Thailand but it's only a short walk away).
