Rumor: pricing for the Windows 7 editions (retracted)

Possible pricing has leaked for the Windows 7 editions, though the information doesn't quite add up as nicely as you would expect it to.

Update: Upon further reflection, we regret posting this rumor. The source was anonymous and not one of our usual, trusted tipsters.

Warning: this information came to me via an anonymous tip and is not from a trusted source of mine. That aside, the reason I'm putting this in the rumor box for now is that there is pricing for Windows 7 Starter, which we know will be sold worldwide, but only via OEMs. Ultimate pricing is also present, and while Microsoft says it will not be selling that edition via retail, the company did say that it will sell and give away the edition during certain promotional periods.

Now, without further ado, here is the rumored pricing for Windows 7 editions (not the upgrade versions):

Windows 7 Starter: $199

Windows 7 Home Premium: $259

Windows 7 Professional: $299

Windows 7 Ultimate: $319

You'll likely notice the lack of Home Basic (only for emerging markets and sold via OEM) and Enterprise (only via volume licensing). But it's worth comparing to Vista pricing. While Windows Vista Home Basic and Windows 7 Starter are definitely not on the same level, they have the same price, but as I already mentioned above the mention of Starter is suspicious, and I doubt OEMs will be buying Starter from Microsoft at $200 apiece. Surprisingly, Home Premium's price increased $20 while Business/Professional didn't budge. If anything, I would expect the opposite to occur given that each edition is a superset of the previous one, so Professional is actually getting more features as it no longer is missing what Home Premium includes. Finally, we have Ultimate dropping $80 which is quite believable if it is going to be sold only during promotions. What are your thoughts?Procing of Windows 7

Actually think MS made a mistake - I think two versions are only necessary, sort of like XP Home and Pro.

Not to forget XP Media Center and XP Enterprise (the Corporate)!

But you're right I would like even just one general version, or if two just the difference in single and volume licensing!

Cheers.

^I have ultimate vista, but MS gave it to me for free, so I'd be interested to see the sales for each version of Vista. Most of the computers had Vista premium installed.

Well home premium is the entry level for me.. And at 259 for what is basically a vista service pack and bug correction they are joking I hope !!

They have ballsed the transition from XP up so badly its no wonder linux is growing so fast in the desktop space.. Only reason any of my computers run windows these days is the vista media center being tied into the xbox 360 media center interface to stream live and PVR'ed TV signals around the home, video jukebox and music etc.. Even that now my xbox is RROD (repaired but not 100%) and being fubared I am looking at shifting to the XBMC on a stable linux base.

Microsoft is thinking like... during the previous century.

This company is unable to see the world and the minds evolving around them.

To pay 199 USD for an OS, designed to be used by dozens of millions of people, a perfect mass market digital product, is just an inane idea.

An old idea. An idea... like in the 80s.

In a way, it's perfectly natural. By doing so Microsoft is digging its own grave. By keeping such "pre-digital age" pricing model, they will push more and more people toward Linux.

Frugality is the key word. The global crisis is going to accelerate this evolution.
