Hoping to have a short break not too far from Chaing Mai, i.e. say no more than a 3 hour drive.

Looking for a resort/hotel that offers a country location with a bit of luxury and beautiful gardens / surroundings.

I know you guys can afford luxury regularly

Any ideas

Cheers

The north one looks nice from the outside...Only one problem if you wanted to go south...

"Anantara Royal Coco Palm Khao Lak suffered extensive damage from the tidal wave which devastated much of the coastal area of Phang Nga province on 26 December. The resort is not expected to reopen in the foreseeable future. For emergency, please call the Anantara hot line at +66 (0)76 338284. The management and staff of Anantara Resorts and Spas would like to express their profound sadness and most sincere condolences to all who have suffered as a result of this terrible tragedy"

Simply wonderful! (and highly suggested).

Do you happen to know if the Golden Triangle Anantara started out as a Merdien in the late 80's/early 90's? If so, it's the place I stayed for just one night on a 5-day northern highlands tour back then. Just the one night, but I'll never forget seeing the dawn mists over the Mekong from my room terrace - even better than in that pic.............. The rest of the place was absolutely beautiful Lanna perfection....... sabaii dee :o

Ajarn, how mut you pay at Angkhang Resort? (And where do you book)

Like, I check their websites and I see prices in US dollars.. You know I have this allergy, it's really strange, caughs, sneezing, itch, rash everytime someone quotes me something priced in US$ in Thailand.. Then I see " ++ " and I'm pretty much out for the count. :o

Cheapest I found on the web in real money is still 3,600 baht until end of Feb, 2000 after that. That's still pricey, but my experience with Amari hotels is that they do listen to reason, so... how mut you pay? :D

Chanchao, I've had pretty good luck using http://www.hotelthailand.com , especially for same-day bookings w/discount. I remember it was just under 2,500 a night (all inclusive, w/ABF) when I stayed there last June for three days. The cheaper rooms (mountain view) are best if you're facing west (The few rooms that face east to the mountain are still nice, but limited in scope. Garden rooms are nice if you're into gardens... Still can't figure why they're considerably more expensive than the mountain view rooms, though.

Beautiful and peaceful spot :o

Yes it used to be a Meridian hotel, and I stayed there in 93,as everyone has said, wonderful views in the morning over the Mekong and Laos/Burma with the morning mist. However I believe they built a big casino on the Burmese bit of land in frontof the hotel on the left hand side,so it may cramp the view a bit.

Thanks for the confirmation - glad I saw it before the casino arrived.......

Can you actually see the casino from the resort? I've never stayed at the resort, though I once had lunch there when it was Le Meridien. I've also been to the casino, on a visa run, and it seems like it wouldn't be possible to see one place while standing in the other.
