International Dl A Good Choice For Tr Visa ?

Featured Replies

I am on a TR Visa, which bars me from obtaining a Thai DL.

I do possess a Singapore DL to be able to drive in Thailand, but I am NOT sure if it's recognized by Thai insurance companies in the event of an accident.

Since there is NO way I can obtain any other form of Visa other than a TR Visa, I'm wondering if an International DL will help in resolving the issue of insurance.

Could anyone advise ?

P.S. Okay, I know all the benefits of a Thai DL, but I am on a TR Visa with no means of obtaining any other form of Visa.

Hmmmm - have you actually been to a driving centre and presented your documents? - it might be worth a try.

A non-immigrant O" or "B" will solve the problem

or an IDL will solve your insurance problem - probably - but only for a ceratian period (3 months?) - if you are staying a while or repeatedly visiting this is not a good option.

A bit of advice - don't apply for a DL in Pattaya.

You mean presenting for documents for a Thai DL ? Like i said, I don't have "O" or "B" Visa, and unlikely to get one based on my current resources. So let's just base everything on a TR Visa.

You mean IDL can only last for 3 months ?

The same answer as in the Insurance forum :

The Insurance Companies in Thailand will recognize and allow a legal 'foreign' DL.

However as a Thai DL is not difficult to obtain we would suggest it is only sensible to get one if you are driving here.

Technically you cant own a car on a TR either.. They often ignore both these rules.

Thanks. The same question - does that mean it would be possible to obtain a Thai DL even with just a TR ?

Some insurance companies will use a foreign licence as an excuse notto pat out - the norm requires international ir Thai licence.

Are you suggesting that the OP should bribe the officials? According to the pinned thread at the top of the Motor Forum, a non-imm visa is a requirement for obtaining a Thai DL.

/ Priceless
