sassienie Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Let them wear what they want to wear who are you to judge.I myself try to wear a lil bit more polite clothes when i go there but i hate dressing up in this country its much too hot to do so. In Holland as an accountant i managed not to wear a suit most of the times i just hate dressing up. If clothes determine what you know than we live in a sad world. I like to be judged on my knowledge not on what i wear. Quite so in a perfect world. But in the real world people do intend to judge a person by what they wear. For example I’m sure you wouldn’t have been successful gaining your accountancy job if you went for the interview wearing a tee shirt, jeans or shorts and flip-flops. Right or wrong, attire says a lot about a person and as I said previous, the obvious is not always the fact, but society will always judge a person by how they do, what they do and draw their own conclusions, it’s a fact of life.

Too be honest i did wear a suit at the job interview and then asked if it was strictly necessary to wear. Because i deliberately went for a small accounting firm i did not have to wear it much. Only when there were important clients and that was not often. Having said that i don't see a point to dress up here. I do however make sure i don't look real bad when i go to immigration but i wont wear a suit. I don't judge people by what they wear but i do understand what your saying. Its not black or white there is a lot of grey.
dave111223 Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 I always figured when working they dress that way to attract customers, and basically say "Open for business".But if you are already (i'm assuming) married (not sure why else they would be at immigration with a foreign guy), why continue to wear the "open for business" uniform? Well I think you are wrong in this assumption. At least in Pattaya where I live, I too suffer much embarrassment on behalf of all farangs when I too have business at immigration and see the specie of fereng you describe in his tank-top t-shirt, shorts, flip-flops, and unshaven face makes an appearance with a bargirl in tow. However, it's obvious to me that these ferengs are tourists and there to obtain tourist visa or 30-day entry extensions (for the most part) and have no clue as to the procedure. The bargirl is there to assist the walking ATM in obtaining a extension of their stay in country for another few days/weeks. She is probably very well versed in the procedure having done it many times in the past for love-lorn ferengs who have been in her company and didn't want to return to reality when their holiday was up. Very good point. I didn't think of that...and makes a lot of sense.
remy1960 Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 You don't learn class, You don't learn trashiness. They're born trashy, they just cannot help it. just smirk at the guy, and enjoy the mental distraction while you wait for your turn. Yep, that about sums it up.
TerryTibbs Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 (edited) In this day and age it's what your good at doing not what you wear. Look at Google's employee dress code, there isn't one, wear what you want. The days where one could judge a mans character or ability (which is more important) by his dress attire at work are long long gone, time to get into the world we live in now. I doubt the immigration give two hoots if one is dressed in a t-shirt and shorts or a suit from Savile Row. Edited May 3, 2009 by TerryTibbs
GuestHouse Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 They dress that way to afford you your moment of superiority.Just ignore them and keep an eye out for the ones who pretend to be something they are not.... And never ever forget, the most dangerous lies are the lies we tell ourselves. So i guess that what you saying is that they are being "who they are"; so does being a working girl need to become "who you are", opposed to "what you do/did". Which is a shame that more cannot draw the line and say "That's what i did", not "who i am". No what I am saying is keep an eye out for the ones who pretend they are something they are not..... And never ever forget, the most dangerous lies are the lies we tell ourselves. As for the distinction between what one does and what one is - This website receives posts with a depressing regularity in which it is very clear that the guys posting lied to themselves about that distinction.
fiddlehead Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 (edited) I vote for the "I like it" side. Except when they are a little over the hill age-wise and have put on a few too many pounds and are still dressing that way. Sort of like complaining about the topless beaches here. I used to think that was cool but seeing some of the older ones, sometimes think there oughta be a law. Edited May 3, 2009 by fiddlehead
greenwood01 Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 please expats, stop wearing 90baht cargo shorts. Either spend 3k baht on a good pair or wear your speedo trunks at all time. just go big or go home.
TAWP Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 If they are nice to look at, no complaints from me... I'm not the one married to the 'tramp'.
yabaaaa Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 My Wife is always telling me to look poor so no thinks we have anything worth stealing. I do wear cheap cargo pants in the Ferrari though
Shotime Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Whenever i go to immigration you can always pick out the foreign men who have married a working girl from a mile away. The women all dress the same, tight jeans, tank top and a baseball hat (with all items displaying some kind of tacky slogan). And also a few tattoos exposed. I always figured when working they dress that way to attract customers, and basically say "Open for business". Fair enough. But if you are already (i'm assuming) married (not sure why else they would be at immigration with a foreign guy), why continue to wear the "open for business" uniform? Maybe they just enjoy dressing this way? Also fair enough, but this would also lead me the question; maybe they just enjoy working in that industry? Why do you ask a question you already know the answer to? I would just add that their dress is a statement of independence from their partner. It must save them "face."

It is v funny, but they don't always wear jeans - they also wear cut-off jeans or shorts (plus a tank-top). As somebody else said, they started off wearing far less, and think they are now dressed like a respectable woman . They have no idea (or the b/f in tow) that its so obvious to everyone else!
Moonrakers Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 There is quite a lot of snobbery coming out in this thread.

473geo Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 There is quite a lot of snobbery coming out in this thread. True - and the ridiculous assumptions and generalisations - from what I see amongst younger Thai ,wearing jeans is quite trendy. But that would be too simple... .........and not worthy of debate on TV.....

Yes, you see Thais wearing jeans who are clearly nothing to do with the stereotype - but its easy to differentiate.
