I have a Canon Laser printer but despite my best efforts I cannot get it to work for Linux, I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and all I want to print are letters and the usual b&w stuff.

All suggestions wecome.

Does anyone want to swap for a Canon Laser printer....

Hi Colin,

a HP Laser Jet works fine, allthough a Canon Laser model should work, too.

What Canon do you have? And is there any error message?

Dirk it is a Laser Shot, LBP 1210. It works OK under Windows (I have the installion CD for Windows but not for Linux).

I don't need colour printing, just for office letters and source code.

Thanks for your interest..

Normally you can google the printer type with the word linux at the end and get a tread that has solutions to any install problems for that type printer.

like this one I didn't read yet myself but good example first hit.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_insta...rinter_in_linux

that link looks trunck it says How do you install canon lbp-1210 printer in linux

this one looks better http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-672928.html

How to install the Canon LBP-1210 printer on Ubuntu 7.10 can't have changed to much.

RKASA, I have been through this process with limited success. Sometimes it works but usually it is simply wasted time and effort.

I have decided to just buy another printer, I know they are kept cheap as the companies make money from the inks etc, not the machine itself.

All I am looking for is a printer which will work in Linux 'Out Of The Box' and not require hours of farting around like the Canon did!!

Thanks,

Colin

He Colin,

Look at Brother, Brother maybe not work out of the box.. but they have drivers in the Ubuntu repo, if not there you can find the at http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/index.html

I have a "old" Brother MFC-3220C Printer, scanner, and fax... I had the idea that it would never work... but it did... Now-a-day we use a HP laser but still the next printer is a Brother again...drivers etc are so easy to get

I'm using a Fuji Xerox Docuprint 203A, a 100% clone of the Brother HL 2040, just cheaper and working well with HL2060 Driver from Brother (in driver data-base of Ubuntu).

For just cheap printing I have a iP1980 canon which worked in PClinuxOS.  The canon site has .deb and .rpm's to support it.  With kpackage Installed I only had to right click the rpm and it installs it.  Then from the task bar select printer set up and its click click.  Works great.    For scaning I have a Lexmark all in one thats not supported in linux and the printer  part is broken anyway.  I have xp in Virtualbox and it scans direact to the file share folder, piece of cake.  I don't think it going to be any easyer then that unless the package is aready installed.  Try listing the printer drivers in ubuntu and then use that as a shopping guide.  Then it should be near plug and play.

He Siamshot,

Are the consumables like drum and toner also identical? Never hear of Xerox using Brother stuff, honestly I would expect the opposite, as Xerox was the inventor of the technology behind the laserprinter...

Still good news, I have two Fuji Xerox copiers on service contract and a Fuji Xerox laser would fit right in...

I went to Macro in Chiang Mai and found an HP Deskjet D1560 and it installed itself very easily. The cost was 950 baht and I am very happy, it has a colour cartridge which is very nice and the only complaint I have is the lengthy and noisy startup routine.
