if Spurs lost 2-0 and west ham won 4-0 next weekend. Its the last game of the season.

It would mean both teams would have the same points and the same goals for and against. 44 for and 44 against. would it mean Spurs would be above West Ham on alphabetical order ??? , that's how the league starts before a ball is kicked, its in alphabetical order

it would then go on an aggregate scoreline of the two matches the teams have played against each other. so spurs would finish ahead.

and there is no league before a ball has been kicked. there's just a collection of teams who haven't played yet.

I know what your saying but before a ball is kicked it shows Arsenal top, Aston villa 2nd and so on, with West Ham bottom, but thanks for the info on the goal difference thing. HA but what would happen then if the 2 teams had drawn with each other :)

not sure about that one, but i think there is still an eventuality when league position can even be decided by the toss of a coin.

I couldn't find an official explanation for calculating league positions, but this is from the Sporting Life site and also Wikipedia.

If two or more teams finish level on points the team with the better goal difference will finish higher.

If two or more teams have the same points and the same goal difference, the team which has scored the higher number of goals will finish higher.

If two or more teams finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored, and the championship, a relegation place or European qualification is at stake, they will then play off to decide who finishes higher.

The playoff would be on a neutral ground. If a playoff is not required, the teams would share the position.

At the beginning of the season, those are not league positions on the list you see before anyone has played a match. They are just listing the teams in alphabetical order, but you could list them anyway you please, there is no officially no position there. So, no, one team will never finish above another simply because their club name's first letter is "A" and the other's is "B". Nonsense.
