Thai zoo surprised by birth of panda cub

By Michael Casey, AP Environmental Writer | May 27, 2009

BANGKOK --A healthy panda cub was born Wednesday at a zoo in northern Thailand.

Staff artificially inseminated Lin Hui, a 7-year-old female, on Feb. 18, but had seen no signs she was pregnant, Chiang Mai Zoo's director Thananpat Pongamorn said.

"She's been anxious since yesterday. She did not want to get close to caretakers or any other people, but we didn't know what the problem was," Thananpat told The Associated Press.

Lin Hui's cub screeched loudly as soon it was born early Wednesday, and appeared healthy, Thananpat said.

Zoo officials said they could not examine the newborn cub closely enough to determine its gender because it would get scared and was too vulnerable to disease, but that they would check when it was a week old.

The United States, Japan and Thailand are the only countries outside China to have bred pandas through artificial insemination, Thananpat said.

Only about 1,600 pandas live in the wild, mostly in China's southwestern Sichuan province.

Protective parent panda may give birth to another cub

CHIANG MAI: -- Zookeepers and staff at Chiang Mai zoo are closely observing the zoo’s guest from China, female panda Lin Hui, after she showed signs of possibly giving birth to another panda cub.

Lin Hui has been carefully cleaning her ‘private and personal’ areas as she did before giving birth to Thailand’s first baby panda on Wednesday. It’s possible that she might produce another cub, according to Prasertsak Buntragulpoontawee, the Project Head for Panda Research and Display in Thailand for the Chiang Mai Zoo.

A closed circuit surveillance camera has been installed for zoo visitors to view the newly-born panda cub after Lin Hui, a seven-year-old female surprisingly paraded her parenthood by giving birth to a healthy panda cub without any sign of pregnancy.

Lin Hua was artificially inseminated on February 18 after the zoo’s attempt to help her mate with her nine-year-old partner Chuang Chuang failed.

Both giant pandas arrived in Thailand in 2003 on 10-year-loan from China.

The panda cub and its mother look healthy, but the new mother is quite protective of her little own. Consequently its gender is not yet known.. Specialists from China will arrive at Chiang Mai zoo Thursday afternoon to assist Thai officials in raising the cub and conducting a health check-up.

Lin Hui has been left undisturbed to raise her own cub naturally for the time being. She is very protective of her cub and has not allowed officials to get close.

Great news! Everyone loves the pandas. I don't know if they are related to other bear species or not, but I do know that Black bears and Grizzlies of North America have some of the smallest offspring at birth in relation to the size of the adults of most other mammals.

I don't know which one is the momma and which is the pappa at the Chiang Mai zoo.

I am not usually one for conspiacy theories, but I refer you to the post of 10/5/2009 by Ajarnpim refering to ' Nice Article About Chiang Mai'

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Nice-Article...tml&hl=joly

We enter the building and both Parker and I are yabbering away loudly. A guard in an ill-fitting uniform rushes up and tells us in no uncertain terms to shut up. Pandas are extremely noise-sensitive, and one is pregnant to boot. The sensitive creatures are already up, but they’re not doing much. To be honest, “up” for a panda means they have their eyes open.

So was the guard the only one who knew.......?

Now ain't THAT the truth. :):D:D

No wonder there isn't any "natural" insemnation. The critters are always sleeping.

Normal, of course, but fascinating how people seem to care more about one panda baby than about all the babies getting knocked off in Sri Lanka, northern Pakistan, or Zimbabwe, just to pick a few places. A few hundred kids get clobbered by an earthquake in China? What the hel_l! Just numbers!

What about around here, too?

Otherwise, do you think there might have been a little "hanky panky" at the zoo??????!!!!!! Somehow?????!!!! After all, we all know about mules!

The thing is that we have an excess of humans on this planet, and there's no way to get rid of us except war, pestilence, disease and natural disasters. But pandas are almost extinct and need protecting. If they bred like rabbits we wouldn't think they were so cute. Unfortunately, it is usually the innocent, the week, the poor and the uneducated humans that get killed off in natural disasters. There are no allowances made for innocent children.

Alcohol is rarely anyone's "friend," if one overindulges.

Sorry, I can not resist, so...

Lannerbirth, do you know something we don't know about this delightful phenomenon? Pandas are warm and furry!

Whatever! All the warm and furry stuff will be endless on the media for days, if not weeks! Except if someone finds a white elephant. But I think that such a discovery will be saved a little while longer.

Your evident inability to tell the differences between males and females might lead to a lot of surprises, especially in Chiang Mai!

They show him Panda Porn.

From Discoverychannel.com website:

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2009/05/28/b...a-thailand.html

Zoo officials had resorted to sometimes-comical strategies to get its two pandas on loan from China to mate over the past six years. They held a mock wedding for the pair, separated them to spark a little romance and then put the male, Chuang Chuang, on a diet to entice Lin Hui.

When that didn't work, they started showing Chuang Chuang "porn" videos of pandas mating, and finally turned to artificial insemination.

The male is the fat one, lying about munching Oreos from his keeper, which is why he is roughly double her weight.

Now substitute beer for biscuits, and I'd say that this is pretty-standard behaviour, for almost any overseas-visitor here in Chiang Mai ! :)

They show him Panda Porn.

Actually, WTK is not joking. I saw something on the Thai news a few months back where in fact they did just that! But apparently that didn't work either. Maybe he is just not attracted to the female? Doesn't like her smell or something; who knows...

The elepandas

WHAT do you get when you cross a panda with three elephants?

No one's quite sure, but it would probably look a little bit like this.

These jumbos were painted black and white by keepers for a parade at Bangkok's Ayutthaya elephant camp to mark the birth of a panda at a local zoo.

It wasn't clear what the trio made of the "treat". But remember, an elepanda never forgets.
