Forum Hostility

Featured Replies

PRobably been discussed/mentioned before, but i dont recall anything in Bedlam on it...anyway..

Sometimes im really taken aback by the antagonistic and/or hostile posts in Thaivisa (and of course happens in other forums too.).

Do you ever wonder what the hel_l is going on? Do you ever goad a bit yourself? :)

Sometimes I dont get why people are quite so venomous at times.

Whats your take on it?

Any thoughts?

personally...

I can be venomous after a few drinks, but I try to confine my venom to offloading my built up tensions after dealing with my ex-wife.

Secondly, I have found I might post (sober) and the respondants seem to have misunderstood my intention. I know what I mean when I post something and quite often I may use sarcasm or similar but not in an attacking manner. After reading replies and then reading my post again it becomes clear how people can misconstrue what was actually meant.

I wonder how many offensive/venomous posts are actually innocent but taken the wrong way.

It seems easy to pick out the drunk who is offloading, but to see through a posters own personality and/or sense of humour without knowing that person or being able to read fgacial expressions is a hard thing to do.

I reckon unhappiness and frustration are the main causes for both the genuinely venomous posts, and the troll ones.

I can't see anything else than that trolling is born out of having an otherwise uneventful or unfulfilling life. Why else would somebody choose to spend time being an asshol_e in an anonymous forum?

I've thought long and hard about this (well 10 seconds) and the answer is quite simple.

What a stupid comment.

(Joke...... and that's how it starts, and as Meadish said, you couldn't see the grin on my face when I typed that)

And you can see that some posters just don't like each other and have a history of it.

God you guys just can't keep it in check, I'm suspending you both :)

Hey, don't get shirty with me. I'll see you on the football pitch afte Schoo. And watch out for the Dog muck.

(Smiley left out, for the full effect)

It weren't me Miss, it was him who started it.

Okay, so sometimes people misunderstand what's being said, however, it happens all too often that people are simply being offensive. Did you read seonai's other thread in the ladies forum? Within 2-3 pages there were members slagging off each others beliefs! many posts had to be deleated. Unbelievable...

I remember one thread regarding this topic, but no harm in bringing it up again, this was my response at that time.

I think people can be a little sensitive on this forum, but I think it can be down to mis-communication through cyber space on occasion, I think people must get their head around, that in a lot of situations it is anonymous cyber talk, although not always admittedly.

I had quite a long PM altercation with a poster who has since developed into a good friend, from an innocuous statement from myself, or so I thought! But it was all down to the unavailability of body language, voice tone and the usual facial expressions, that are all part of the usual mix.

I can't link the thread because it got closed because of bringing in the Mods actions, other than that it was quite a good thread.

Definitely agree with misunderstandings. For example one guy got a bit irked because he posted something in one forum and i suggested he may get a better response in a different forum. I guess how i worded it could be interpreted that i was being pedantic or something, but i was trying to be helpful. I think i even made it worse by trying to explain that i meant it to be helpful!

I find myself if i read something when im in a bad frame of mind, i can often read something negative in a post, where there was no need to. Also, usually if you see a few annoyed posts from me within a couple of days of each other, it means i have pmt! :D

But yeh, i agree with tigs, some people just seem to be plain antagonistic. Seems like some like any reason to nit pick, gripe, put down, stir things up etc.

Anyway..Taddy and MrBj, stop bickering on my bloody thread!!! :)

:D <--and now for the joking smiley, which = tension eased! (hopefully!)

I remember one occasion when MrToad made an tongue in cheek remark apart whipping somebody. Half the forum turned on him when it was clear he simply did not mean it literally.

Or when sbk or Boo (can't remember which) made a comment about giving somebody a slap. It was obvious that she did not mean it as in a physical slap but still the knifes where out for her for condoning violence.

I can be quite amusing at times.

That's it .... I'm going to stop calling you sweetheart now.

It's a lot less dangerous than being an asshol_e down the pub :)

I remember it too, and I'm not going to go searching for my comments, but they were something along the lines of this ......

Some people in this and the wider forum I have met, some I only know by association i.e I've met Moss, but I have never met Tiggs, but Moss has. Therefore I know that Tiggs is a real person, and even if he says something that I disagree with, I'll just disagree with him, but not insult him. The same way that I would treat him in any social gathering, and I would expect he would do the same to me for the same reasons.

The real battles in here are usually between people who have no connection at all, no idea what each other are like..... and usually don't care as they are just hiding behind a keyboard.

For exactly that matter I love attending the TV parties as I can meet there the faces behind the avatars. I reckon I know by now some 50 people from TV and counting. I cannot really recall having ever been flamed - until I was promoted to mod and it took about a day for the first not-so-nice PM :)

Have you had a death threat yet? :D

Do not believe anything Mr JoeMangles says, he's a lying two faced, blue nosed ninkompoop.....!

:)

redrus

<deleted> is you people's problem anyway? Grow a pair and get over it :)

:

Antagonism? towards moi? never. I only receive the kindest, most complimentary posts and PM's.

OK, except for that guy who told me I was a "rinkly, ugly old woman". Or that guy who called me a fat feminazi bitch. Or that guy who.....

Oh never mind :D

he is working on it, I am sure endure.

I am ever the pedant, what really worries me, is that I didn't have to look back and check the original :)

Causes? Various. The top five causes would probably be immaturity (unchecked aggression/narrow mindedness), anti-social tendencies, boredom, inebriation, and/or temperament at the time (poor frame of mind caused by other factors). The recurring problems come from the anti-social ones, who usually end up being banned; and the immature ones, who can develop into useful contributors if they are not banned in the first place (or who, after banning, reinvent themselves).

Judging by the fact that roughly half of all members of TV who have made more than one post have been banned, I would 'guestimate' that at the very least, 15% of currently contributing TV members are people who have previously been banned. (The figure may be much higher).

Moss and I have never met but will meet, God Willing, in the future. :D

ps But I'm still a real person! :)

Not for me to question your thoughts here Ping, but there are over 75k members, of which there are over 5k banned.

Now I know some of the remaining members are 'de facto' banned and I haven't looked at the one posters, but to say 50% of more than one post are presently on the banned list is stretching it, I would hazard a guess.

Why do I have the feeling you are going to prove me wrong?

The first part of your post would be a pleasure and the second part is a given.

Bad math Ping. Most banned members are spammers. I would say over 80%.

I'm not going to prove you wrong - I must have been having a "seniors' moment". I did the stats a few months ago, but my memory of them was incorrect. The correct figure is that 1 in 7 active members has been banned. Therefore, my estimate of reinventees is also out - so it's probably closer to somewhere between one in fifty and one in one hundred currently active members being a reinventee. Thanks for challenging my figures - nothing worse than getting stats wrong.
