I think that the reasons given in various previous posts are correct but there are also simple things such as

1) Language. The forum base is English and for some it is a not their native language. Their participation must be commended because of the additional difficulty involved. We sometimes forget that we are talking to someone with a different understanding of the language

2) Idiom. There are vast differences between interpretation of the language between native English speakers. I was reminded of this when I just used the term "bagging" in reference to making criticism. The person I was typing with had not heard the term and had no idea what I meant.

3) Cultural. Different countries have different levels of what is acceptable behaviour and speech. Try calling someone in the US "an old bastard" and wait for the response. Try using the same line in Australia and differentiate between using it on a friend and someone you don't know

4) Context. Very important to match the situation. I remember making a reply to a friend where I wrote "you would think that, but that's because you are stupid" Fortunately the mod who read it knew both of us and the context.

5) Rapid Response. It is very easy to respond in a way that appears abrupt when replying to a large number of messages.

I think we have all made a reply that in retrospect we would have liked to delete or modify it somehow.

Vics post that we should reply as if the person was within arm reach and much bigger is always good advice. Never say on line what you would not be prepared to say face to face.
