Never Leave Your Crash Helmet Unattended In Pattaya

Pattaya, July 30, [PDN]: Most motor bike riders never secure their helmets. They just leave them hanging on their bikes or bungeed to their seats every time they park, just like Mr. Supot Sangsee, [50] from Nongprue, a sports reporter of Tipmanee Cable TV.

At 10.30 pm, on 29 July, Mr. Supot parked his motorbike at a section of the regular customer parking lot of Pattaya Police Station and walked over to chat with his reporter friends, who were standing around in front of the police station.

After chatting for a few minutes, he happened to turn around to glance at his motor bike.

What he saw surprised him, a foreign man had just grabbed his helmet, put it on his head and jumped on another bike nearby, while his foreign girlfriend leapt on the back as they sped away, heading towards Walking Street.

Mr. Supot and his friends sped after the thief and his girl on their motorbikes, giving chase to the farang couple, but the thief and passenger managed to escape.

Mr. Supot, then reported the incident to Pol. Lt.Col. Sompol Nakkum, the investigator, who then filed and registered the complaint.

Mr. Supot was told by the police officer that the farang couple was Russian nationals. They had apparently come to the police station to pay their fine for riding a motorbike with no helmet. When they walked out of the police station, apparently spotting an unattended helmet and not wanting to be fined again, the man had obviously seized the opportunity and pinched the helmet.

“I couldn’t believe even farangs could also be thieves in Pattaya,” Mr. Supot snorted, peeved about losing his brand new 400 baht helmet.

Yeah I've had a few helmets lifted over the years, I certainly wouldnt leave one of my good ones unattended even for a few seconds. Same with the bike, you need to be really careful where you leave ur bike, they are so easily loaded into pick up & after ones stolen it would be like finding a needle in a hay stack to recover it. :)

I hate dirty rotten stinking low life theives, they are the pits :D:D

Some bikes have a place where you can lock the ring of the helmet strap. That's not safe either. A friend of mine had a GOOD expensive helmet. A thief cut the strap and stole the helmet. A shoe repair shop will sew on a new ring for 50 baht.

Thought that was on the list of Thai only occupations...don't they need a work permit?? :)

hehe..yeh good one.. :D

sad truth is no-one would have given a stuff if it was the farang who had his helmet lifted, certainly no-one would worry about giving chase and reporting to police like p1ssing upwind :D
