Hi Hi Forum

I am planning a trip to Laos, Vientienne.

Previously, I am non immigrant but now having to start overland boarder-runs. UK passport holder below the retirement age for TH.

I want to apply for a double-entry tourist visa, can someone explain whether this is still free, how long it allows to you to stay in Thailand, and how many days in-country should I allow for when applying.

I would also like to take my Son, and daughter, just for the trip. They have dual nationality, but wanted to take them into Laos with Thai passport as I was informed some time ago that this would be cheaper due to bilatteral agreements, can somebody please expand on this with knowledge base.

Thanx in advance.

Yes double entry tourist visa is still free until March 2010. The Laos visa is 1500 bht to enter Laos.

You need to submit your passport at the Consulate in Vientianne before 12:30 pm the doors open about 8:30-9 am depending if they are on time or not., and collect it the next day from 1pm-3:30pm

The double entry tourist visa is for 60 days + 60 days , you can get 2x30 day extention of each visa in Thailand for 1900 bht per extention. You can then on completion of the visa and extentions do 4 x 15 day border runs. You must leave Thailand for a renewal of the tourist visa after that .

My Thai wife comes with me sometimes and enters Laos using her Thai passport - no charge for her , so your kids on Thai passports should be ok also .

I was just there on the 3rd and used a guy that will pick up your passport at your hotel, do everything for you and bring it back the next day about 1pm with a double entry tourist visa for 2,500 baht.

I used him because there was about 200 people already in line and I was 15 minutes early.

If you would like his contact info, please PM me.

Oh, I heard that Monday's and Thursday's are very busy.....I got to see a Monday.

Thank you for ALL your replies, very informative. Running on a budget so will arrive EARLY to beat some of the queing. Whats the best currency to use at the moment when padding around Vientienne, Laos, KIP, USD, or THB, for taxis, hotels, food, etc.

Currency? I normally use baht as US$$ are hard come by and I save those. Your change will often be in kip or partially in kip.

I like the cashier bills from the Khop Chai Deu Restaurant there near the Nam Phou, computerized bill lists currency of payment in Euros, $$$, kip, and baht, your choice.

Is it possible to get a tourist visa for 60 days + 60 days and get 2x30 day extension's and then go back and get another tourist visa for 60 days + 60 days and get 2x30 day extension's or must I leave the country by air at that point and if so what nearest country would I get another multi entry tourist visa?

You can get a double entry tourist visa. If you are in Thailand best consulate to use is Vientiane (Laos). At 60 days you can extend visa for further 30 days at immigration, fee 1,900 baht. At 90 days you need to do border run and re-enter Thailand to activate second 60 day stay. Repeat above process to extend visa by further 30 days. Then start the process again if you want to stay longer . You would need to obtain re-entry permit (fee 1,000 baht) if you leave Thailand during 60/30 day periods to keep your permission to stay stamp alive (or visa becomes cancelled).

I just returned from Laos August 7th. One can save money by paying for the Laos Visa on Arrival in US$. Despite being part of a Thai visa tour group I paid $35 plus $1 overtime fee instead of THB 1,600. A savings of about 400 Baht.

Can you please confirm what documentation is required when applying for a double-entry tourist visa at the Thai Embassy, in Vientienne, Laos.

Just only your passport is enough but do not forget photo's and I always like to pay in Kip gives you more for your money, example buy a can of beer in baht 35 in kip 24 so there is a difference.

the only minus thing is, when you change for example at bank of ayuthaya, you got to wait 10 minutes for your cash.

US dollars are easy to come by. If you are taking a flight to Udon Thani you can change baht to $US at the currency exchange just outside the AirAsia checkin area on the way to the departure lounge. They can give you small denominations too.

If you are not flying, many currency exchangers (in Pattaya) will sell you US dollars. It's easy to buy US dollars in banks too.

$US are not really necessary but you can save some money if you buy the Laos VOA in $US.
