The Nicest Fence Contest

Featured Replies

I'm ready to have a fence built on my house but I haven't seen a design I really like. So I'm asking TVers to post pictures of nice fences they have seen. Basically a concrete stailnless steel combination that are common throught Thailand.

So post your pics and win my eternal gratitude! Contest ends September 15th.

Perhaps better than offering cash on the forum is to offer to take someone out for dinner and a beer. But I don't think offering a cash prize is a good idea.

Does it actually break any TV rules or is it only your opinion? I don't see the harm in rewarding someone for their efforts.

And the winner is......

personally i think they are all horrific.

especially the gaudy chrome/stainless ones.

why not clean and simple?

I agree, no class just all show.

Plus not that secure . park a pickup along the fence, use the side of the pickup as a step , throw a couple of blankets on top of the spikes and roll over the spikes into the yard.

How about some visuals of what you consider non-horrific and secure? A 3-meter tall solid block wall provides nice cover for thieves to do their work unobserved once they get over, so even that isn't perfect.

Here is our fence ...

Everyone has a different need, want and belief when it comes to fences. I think you should use this post as a chance to see real life projects and (quietly) decided which one (or none) you prefer. :)

Ain't it great that a fence is almost a must in Thailand for that feeling of security... but you really can't make them high enough to keep out the bad guys that really want to pay your house a visit.

IMO, a fence serves multiple purposes. In the USA, I have had a fence around all or part of my yard (usually the back yard though) all of my life.

In Thailand, a fence keeps stray dogs out (and your dog in if you have one).

A fence lets everyone around know what is common area (ground, trees, plants) and what belongs to you. In the country, people pick all kinds of things from the vegetation on the side of the road. But never beyond the fence line.

A fence (and gate) is ONE PART or one layer of your security plan. Just like a castle had watch towers, a moat, a drawbridge and safety rooms inside the castle .... a house here needs multiple layers. Beyond the decorative fence, you might include an electrical fence, all night lighting, motion sensitive lighting; on the house you might have bars, steel doors and an alarm system. Add a housekeeper who is never gone when the owner is gone. And of course, the ever-vigilant dog. :)

Most home robberies are opportunistic based on "easy pickings". IMO, you can make your house more secure without making it feel like a prison.

In most all cases, you will have a fence in Thailand. What type of fence is up to your personal preference more than anything else.

That is true.

But a see thru fence allows a potential thief case your property to note your movements and to see what is worth taking .It also does not allow privacy for any of your outdoor activities and this can then mean a sizable portion of your property is non- functional except for display purposes.

I don't know the right answer , just throwing in a few things to consider .

A see through fence is neighborly, nothing isolates a family from their neighbors more than a solid fence. Our fence is meant to keep our dog in the yard not isolate us from our neighborhood. The best defense against theft is being friendly with your neighbors.

You are right there about having good neighbours that can see if there are intruders. The other thing with see thru fences is that they can expand your area by giving the illusion that the neighbours yard is an extension of your own .

Incidently I really like chaihot's concrete/stone wall. Very tasteful.!!!

sakeopete, while looking on google for something unrelated, I came across these fence designs and thought they were nice:

Did you make a decision yet on your fence?
