One Small Step For Men

It has been one of the elusive goals of seafaring nations almost since the beginnings of waterborne trade, but for nearly 500 years the idea has been dismissed as an impossible dream. Now, as a result of global warming, the dream is about to come true.

News Story

What I find quite entertaining is the arrogance of the present set of humans (i.e. us). We think that we can stop/prevent/reverse the turning of the world on its axis. We think we're something special. Eventually, with or without global warming, the human race will be destroyed in the same way that the dinosaurs were. It's gonna happen. Get used to it.

Unless we introduce eugenics NOW!! It's the only answer.

We must colonize space!!!!!!!!

I'm not going there. Well, not until they get fast speed Internet :)

We must colonize space!!!!!!!!

Correct and hopefully the passage being opened up for more month is to be celebrated, not condemned by the tree-hugging brigade.

The sun is the factor, not mankind, we just have to move with the changes, rather than jump around like chicken littles. :)

Prevention is better than cure.

What steps are to be taken if the seas rise and obliterate thousands of sq kilometers of habitated land? What steps are to be taken if climate change destroys the food crop?

I did say "if". But is it not better to err on the side of caution?

The world could be a cleaner place, I'm all for that.

But what's this about countries or even individuals being able to continue to pollute (OK, emit as much CO2 as they want) as much as they want as long as they buy carbon offsets or something like that? One, who gets this money, and two, isn't the idea to pollute LESS, not feel better about your ever-growing carbon footprint by paying somebody off?

These carbon "offsets" or 'carbon credits' are produced by 'green' projects, such as building renewable energy facilities or re-forestation projects.

When purchasing these 'carbon credits', the money is used to directly fund such projects therefore going someway to compensate for the pollution that is emitted.

OK, but who handles the money? Who is the middle man? Someone is getting a cut and getting rich.

Are carbon credits different or the same from what was under Kyoto where countries like Russia who are well below their 1990 emission levels could "sell" the difference to other countries?

Exactly but you must remember many on this bandwagon grew up watching TV.

On it they surely saw the episode where superman flew around the world counter rotation very quickly & did

in fact reverse the rotation. Soooooooooo :):D

i hope you sleep on a rubber sheet to prevent dirtying your mattress with the result of your wet dreams :)

This is what I grew up with...

This is what I grew up with...

I didn't read it but..........

Around that time 1975 I did attend a lecture by a Taoist Buddhist Monk

He said the same....

He said in the future we would see much lower temps.

That was many years ago but if I remember correctly his views were based on the earth

tipping a fraction more on its axis each year. Cannot even remember now if it was based on science or philosophy/Prophecies

Am I wrong in thinking that only certain parts of the world would experience this? North and South Polls for example? They would probably get hotter as well.
