Tiles On Indoor Staircase

Featured Replies

G'day,

We are doing some remodeling work and while at it, we want to rip out the wood on the staircase that goes up to the 2nd floor and replace them with tiles.

Little did we know that it is not a common thing after visiting several places - HomePro, GlobalHouse, HomeMart, etc. The best we have found were the RCI terracotta tiles. They have a large nose so it helps to extend the length of the steps as the they are already quite short. However, I think the tiles don't look good in the house, for the gardens maybe.

Can you paint them? Or should we just keep the wood and replace the cracked pieces?

Thanks

Matt

Is it wood ontop of a concrete staircase?

Not easy to see how you can tile otherwise.

Have you considered stone slabs? Nice and thick so you can have quite an overhang to make a wider step.

Yes it is wood on top of concrete.

Stone slabs? Hmm ... we haven't thought about it or come across it. Thanks for the tip, we'll look into that.

If stone slabs are used, make sure they are non-slip and bullnosed at the protruding edges. You do not want to slip on the stair and hit your shin against a sharp angled edge.

If tiles, a metallic or pvc nosing piece should be used.

We used stone for the stairs in our house. I was surprised how inexpensive it is.

Here's a link to our build.

That's a very nice staircase. Looking at your photos, it give us the idea that we could extend the length of our stairs quite easily (we were told previously that it was not possible) and just use regular tiles to reduce cost.

thanks

Matt
