Jet Ski Scam Or Genuine Accident?

Featured Replies

Pattaya, September 29 [PATTAYA ONE NEWS] : In a scene reminiscent of the recent TV show broadcast in UK called “Big Trouble in Thailand”, we were made aware of a potential Jet Ski scam taking place on Pattaya Beach on Monday Afternoon. Opposite the Royal Garden Plaza, two Tourists thought to be of Indian Nationality had been detained following an alleged Jet Ski Accident. We were shown the damage sustained to both Jet Ski’s and the damage appeared “fresh”. As it the norm in these types of cases a financial settlement was discussed at the scene to avoid the case being taken any further. The Jet Ski Operator, Khun Noot, asked for 12,000 Baht to cover the damage of both Jet Ski’s. Both Tourists refused to pay and were therefore taken to Pattaya Police Station to continue the negotiations. On the way, both men decided to offer the Jet Ski Operator 10,000 Baht which was duly accepted. Payment was handed over and the two men who were accompanied by three other friends went on their way. We spoke with the Jet Ski Operator and asked him if he was aware of the UK TV program which reportedly showed a Jet Ski Scam in Phuket involving a Jet Ski Operator known as “JJ”. He had seen the story on Thai TV but promised this was a genuine accident and genuine damage had been caused.

Nice ending.... 10K is a reasonable amount. JJ should take a lesson from Pattaya Jetski lads.

Why are they allowed to rent out their jet skies without any insurance?

I f somebody get killed,what then???

In Europe the rental service have to be responsible.

This isn't Europe.

It appears like fresh damage. Also, two jet skis were damaged which fits (if they bumped each other – and the location of damage seems to indicate that).

The amount requested to cover the repair costs were not over the top.

I believe the rental guy was being straight.

Should the rental businesses have insurance – Yes, so should all cars, motorbikes etc etc etc…

One step at a time though I guess.

remember JJ would settle on 40 K ! .. same damamge , different payments

JJ - was taking the piss that was the difference and claiming old damage. :)

An insurance scheme could be difficult to operate as well as putting up operating costs and rental fees.

Maybe the operator can help himself by taking a few digital pictures of the ski before every rent. They could even be printed out and signed by both parties then if there is any damage both parties will know where it came from and there should be no argument.

INSURANCE!!! INSURANCE!!! INSURANCE!!!

Ask the guy - "do you have insurance on your Jetski" - if he says no, go to the next guy.

We managed to find 2 guys who had insurance which covered damages and personal injuries.

So the legit guys are down there - use them! - dont go to the scammers.

Well there may (or may not) be third party insurance, which would cover damages and injuries to others (same as with rental cars) but first party insurance would and should only be available as an option. How this works out if two jet skis of the same operator/owner collide I have no idea. Perhaps there's only personal injury compensation.

So far as i know, there is no insurance possibile for this Jet sky business. 10'k or even 12'k isn't much. for the 2 jetsky. It's not only the damage! During the repairtime the 2 jstskis can't be rented out. There os no coverage for rental loss, even in the car rent business the insurance pays only the damage, but not the time durig repairs. Therefore some car rental companies make the customer responsabile for their lost of rentaltime during the car is in the repair shop.

We aren't in Erupope where everything is covered and can be insured.

As soon as you start to take pictures, they will tell you that they won't rent to you....
