PHUKET: A host of 'wacky races' will take place during the Phuket Community Foundation's 'Race Day' at Canal Village in Laguna Phuket next month.

The aim of Race Day is to raise funds for grant-making at the end of the year and to raise awareness of the PCF and its activities.

The day will feature kayak races, dragon boat racing, cardboard box races for kids and the main event, the rubber duck race.

The fun will start at 2pm on November 7.

Rubber duck races are a common – and highly successful – form of fundraising in many countries. The biggest race in the world involves as many as 100,000 rubber ducks.

Each duck has a number written on its underside. The first six ducks to cross the finish line win prizes for the people who have bought those numbers.

Prizes are set to include a four-night stay for two at a Banyan Tree spa pool villa, valued at 154,800 baht; a three-night stay for two at an Amanpuri garden villa, valued at 115,000 baht; and a year's family membership at the Phuket International Academy Sports Club, valued at 100,000 baht.

A duck will cost entrants 150 baht (US$5).

They are available from a number of outlets across Phuket, including the reception at the Phuket Gazette, Woody's Sandwich Shoppes and Phuket International Hospital.

They can also be purchased over the internet.

From 2.15pm onwards on Race Day, there will be entertainment for children, including a bouncy castle, face painting and balloon creations.

Drinks and food will be available, and after the award ceremony at 6.30pm, the party will continue late into the night.
