Trampoline causes Vic freeway crash

A flying trampoline has caused a crash between a car and a truck on a freeway in Melbourne's southeast.

Paramedics say the trampoline blew off the roof of a car transporting it along the Princes Freeway at Narre Warren shortly after 8pm (AEDT) on Tuesday.

The trampoline then flew into the windscreen of the car behind.

That car was then struck from behind by a semi-trailer.

Ambulance Victoria advanced life support paramedic Jamie Watkinson said a 29-year-old man suffered swelling, a cut on the forehead and pain in his eyes and chest from the collision.

He was taken to the Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition.

A 22-year-old woman from the same car suffered minor injuries and was also taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition.

The truck driver was not injured.

i just checked out the Vic Roads site and apparently...

  • 80 tonnes of debris is removed from Victorian roads each month.
  • 700 call-outs to collect debris each year, with half of these putting staff in dangerous situations.
  • More than 50 cars were hit by items falling off a trailer or truck in 2008 — some of these caused serious injury.
  • VicRoads picks up debris across metropolitan Melbourne each month, costing more than $80,000 per year.

I wonder what the score in Thailand is ?

I think they use it to repair the roads with :D

I've just come back from the Home center in town where I bought a new door.

I said to the Mrs that I'd better buy a bit of rope or an occy strap to tie it down in the back of the ute/truck.

She assured me that "they" would attend to all that.

Yeah sure.

I was expected to drive the 20km home with a loose door on the back.

I needed a bit of rope anyway, I might need to tie something else down one day.

I get the jitters sometimes behind trucks laden down with stuff. Im especially wary of anything like machinery on the back of a truck that has a pendulum action tied back. Visions of it coming loose and swinging into the windshield flash through my head.

"...$80,000 per year....". That man Vic Roads sure must earn his salary to cover all of metropolitan Melbourne.

My biggest fear is a person falling off the back of a pickup. Odds are that it happens regularly.

Only a couple of months ago, I was driving on a motorway here in Riyadh and a pair of alluminium step ladders flew off a small flat back truck. I made a split decision to drive straight over them as there were cars on both sides and behind me. When I pulled over I found they hadn't realy done much damage to the underneath of the car.

However, straight after I ran over the ladders, I could see in my rear view mirror that others didn't take the same action and swerved to avoid the ladders, the guys swerving caused absolute havoc and carnage.

I guessing they fear it more than you mate. :)

Ksk carpark, Chiang Mai. Watched a truck, filled wayyy up and over past the brim with those traditional triangle cushions, twist up the ramp to the next level. On the back of the truck, at the top of the pile, lying down on their bellies, hanging on for dear life, were two young Thai guys. They were laughing. They noticed me and saw the shock on my face, and laughed even more. What could i do except break out in a laugh too! Couldnt believe my eyes!
