The Great British Tv Quiz.

Featured Replies

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my pleasure to offer The Great British Televison Quiz.

The programmes represented span 40 years of television with some being well known internationally so most people could get a few.

I have taken onboard various suggestions from previous threads to compile just under 90 seconds of television from the UK. You need to be quick to grab those points with the first clip being just less than one second long. An extra two bonus points for the first to spot the connection to Thailand.

Although the quiz was mastered in .AVI format, I have provided a handful of converted format versions as well. For those that had trouble last time please try the .WMV version first.

(Each file below has identical contents, video & sound.)

If you are sitting comfortably - then you may begin.

Cuban_s_Great_British_TV_Quiz.avi AVI Format.

Cuban_s_Great_British_TV_Quiz.wmv WMV Format.

Use your mouse to save the video file locally on your computer, maybe the image below helps if you have some trouble.

Ahhhhh. Thanks for the screenshot. It was the right click and save that I wasn't doing.

Hmmmm.

Don't scroll down other guessers.....my initial responses below....some I think I know but have to recall the name....I promise I won't google.

#5...Mrs Bucket.....got it, "Keeping up Appearances".

#7, no doubt, "Fawlty Towers".

#10, "Yes, Prime Minister"...or the first series, "Yes, Minister".

#13 (if I have kept track of the clips), "Porridge". (with Ronnie)

#14, was that a young Chris Tarrant of WWTBAM? Don't know the program.

#15, Steptoe & Son"

Bugger.. lost count .... maybe #17....2nd last, "Blakes 7"

The B&W clip, #4 or #5, just after the mushroom guy....before Mrs Bucket....the music reminds me of "Hancocks Halfhour", but the footaqge does not seem humourous.

Don't mouse over if you don't want to see my answers :)

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

How do you do that blacking out/mousing over?....cool.

Type something

eg: something

Highlight it with your mouse

click, in the full/more options 'reply' (ie: NOT 'fast reply' mode), drop down box entitled: "Insert Special Item"

post-12676-1257033597_thumb.jpg

from the drop down box choose "INSERT: Spoiler"

Post: and hey presto!

something

Bugger, that didn't work.

Hmmmm.

let me try again.

and again, grrrr.

If this doesn't work, I give up.

xxxxxxx

nnjnnnn

Hmmm, I can't insert ANY special item.

bhbhbhbhh

Right, the only ones I got were,

A World at War

Tomorrow's World

Keeping Up Appearances

One of Keith Floyd's (RIP) progs

Fawlty Towers (the very first one, "A Touch of Class")

Yes Minister/Prime Minister

Going Straight

Steptoe and Son

The Sky at Night

Er, that's it, I'm afraid. Great quiz though. Cheers, Cuban. :)

Harcourt,

instead of fapping about with drop down boxes etc.... Why not try this:

before and after the word(s) you wish to black out, type (WithOUT any spaces)

[ spoiler ] xxxxxx [ / spoiler ]

Use all the same brackets and the forward slash but no spaces within the brackets

This should be the result

if you're still having trouble, I suggest you quote this post in a reply (ie: click "quote" button, then "reply" at the bottom of this very post). You should then see exactly how I did it.

good selection Cuban!

Doing well, full answers in a few days - these listed below are incorrect:

TisWas

Going Straight

and the Thai connection, "Ting Tong from Tooting." in Little Britain.

Have another think.

Firstly - couldn't view either the ".avi" or the ".wmv" versions, so that was a waste

Secondly - have only heard of 'Tomorrow's World'; 'Keeping Up Appearances'; 'Fawlty Towers' and 'Steptoe and Son'

Any of the original Alf Garnett / 'Til Death Us Do Part recordings around - not seen any except the PC last series that killed it all orf. Being a West Ham supporter, I really believed the original series were true-to-life.

I know the Thai connection. I went back to have a look because I thought of actors from The King And I.

In number 9, (just after Fawlty Towers) "Thai university students" is mentioned.

Well heard Harcourt, I thought people would be watching Ray Winston swinging that sock with the snooker ball too closely to hear the dialogue in the background.

I think Crossy has the most points, full answers below:

UFO (1970)

I started out by including the Century 21 logo with accompanying cymbal crash, but you only need to glimpse that twitching eye for a fraction of a second if you know the programme.

The Apprentice (2009)

Lord Sugar and Co.

The World At War (1973)

Such distinctive opening credits, I thought this image and short sound clip would be easy.

Whoops Apocalypse (1982)

I was trying to use a different section of this programme, but it was too much of an 'in' joke to be accessible and the image wasn't very clear, I thought that part of the opening title followed well from TWAW image.

Tomorrow's World (1968)

...or 'The kiss of death to the live demonstrations of technology'.

Keeping Up Appearances (1990)

I put this one in so a friend would get at least one right this time round, he has a running score of about zero so far.

Floyd On France (1987)

A British TV quiz needs at least one cooking programme.

Fatty Owls
Fawlty Towers (1875)

There were so many clips I could have taken from this series, again only a fraction of a second would have been enough - but I suffered from a reformatting problem during the edit so I lengthened the clip.

Scum (1977)

If you need those bonus points, this scene was cut from the original play version not the later movie release. Two extra points if you mentioned that, and another two points if you spotted(!) the voice on the television in the background talking about a "Thai University student".

Little Britain (2004)

Best comedy to come out of the UK in many years, IMHO.

Yes Prime Minister (1987)

I originally cut this clip for the discussion about UK politician’s expenses, but it was too long, I think it's well known enough to be cut short.

The Great Egg Race (1984?)

Very fringe (I thought) I only included this to make the whole thing a bit harder.

Vision On (1976)

Thank you Michael Johnson for your nice picture of a Spitfire.

Porridge (1975)

I hoped this was a difficult clip, one of the few scenes filmed outside the prison environment, not Going Straight which was the follow on series.

Over The Top aka O.T.T. (1982)

Hopefully another difficult clip, unless the large pink letters on the front of the desk don't give it away.

Steptoe And Son (1973)

36 years old and reflections of similar politics today.

Blakes 7 (1980)

I admit that I am a sci-fi fan, the logo in the background is a dead give away if you know the series.

Out Of Town (1980?)

Again distinctive music as a cryptic clue?

The Sky At Night (2009)

I believe that this is the longest running factual television series in the world, with Sir Patrick Moore's dialogue apt for the 31st of October.

I hope this was fun, I enjoyed watching it myself.

Yup, great idea Cuban.

I'm actually watching Floyd on France now, (it was a free leech on TheBox when Keith died) just hadn't got to that bit.

Does anyone remember an earlier (much) version of The Apprentice (I'm sure it didn't have the same title and pre-dated the US show) with Sir John Harvey Jones? IIRC young business students were given a real small company to fix, much on the lines of the much later Troubleshooter series.

All we need now is for one of our US or Aussie members to do a local version, or perhaps a Global TV Challenge would be in order?
