A foreigner has been coerced out of committing suicide at the Green Pattaya Hotel earlier today. The foreign man had allegedly run off on a taxi fair, claiming to have run out of money.

Pattaya, the 24th of November 2009 [PDN]: Police Lieutenant General Chonphat Nualak received a call that a foreign man was threatening to commit suicide at the Green Pattaya Hotel, at approximately 1:30pm. Lt Gen Nualak sent officers to investigate along with the Sawang Boriboon Foundation.

At the scene police were confronted with an unintelligible foreign man, standing on the edge of a 5th floor balcony threatening to jump. Police managed to stop him from jumping after a short while.

Police obtained a statement of the afternoons events from the taxi driver who was also present at the scene, Mr Panya Sealim age 49 (driver with the Bangkok Taxi Cooperative). Mr Sealim explained to police that he had given the foreign man a lift from the Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport to Pattaya for an agreed price of 1,500 baht. Upon arriving at “The Tops” on Central Pattaya Road the man requested to get out, speaking to another foreign man on the roadside before proceeding to run to the Green Pattaya Hotel, where he proceeded to attempt to commit suicide.

A search of the man revealed that he was travelling without a passport and only had the credit card of a Mr Alexander Clouch age 34, of German Nationality in his possession. Police managed to comprehend that the foreign man had taken the taxi from the airport to Pattaya but did not have the money to pay for the fare, so he decided to commit suicide.

The police remain very sceptical of the whole situation as the young man in question still seems not to be fully aware of what he is saying. Officers will keep the man in custody until his mental state is improved, at which time he will be further questioned about the events surrounding this unusual incident.

^ Sorry but drunk idiots may get you sympathy but personally I think people like that should stay off the 'jimmy hiss' and perhaps then they might have a bit more money.

Fair call on Basil's behalf, there are certainly no shortage of farang twits who come into Thailand and make the headlines :) & of course you know what the thais say about it, don't you?

Dear me!

Suicide is a very private matter. Let him be.

My personal belief is:

People who talk of suicide, usually do not do.

People who really want,- do it.

Nobody kills himself over 1500Bt. Even Germans.

What is the relevance of pointing out he is German?

Why incoherent? Spent all his money on drugs? What kind of?

Why come to Pattaya from BKK? Don't they have hotels in there?

The man is a manipulator. I don't feel sorry for him.

What about the poor sod of a driver? Surely he deserves more compassion!

Was this room in the hotel rented by the incoherent foreigner? How did he get in?

The whole post looks like a heap of bulldust. :D

Oh, yes, Dpolenz, I am being cynical in this case... Why not give him 1500Bt to pay the driver. Ooops, he probably needs more. Much more. To stay incoherent. :D

"midasthailand, hansum man" :D

Actually, as its common for thais to lump 'farang' into one single cateogry, or as people having come from farangland, they probably say "ahhh falang, no good"

If he is a drunk.... then he is an idiot and deserves whatever comes his way.

If he is suffering from manic depressive and/or mental illness - it is NOT something for us to make fun of, and God Bless him let's hope he gets help.

Unfortunately the local press seems only able to ambulance chase and never seems able to follow up these stories so my response was more in generalisation taking the opportunity comment while the story was live rather that wait in hope of disclosure of the real facts of this story.

So probably we will nether know if,

This was some poor individual who escaped from some institution thereby not having access to the daily medication required, managed to get past boarder control in his home country, stowaway on a flight to BKK, borrowed some poor German Nationals credit card to shim a few locks at BKK airport to bypass immigration, found an illegal taxi tout who offered a ride to Pattaya where he heard of very nice entertaining ladies who could also be very compassionate with the hope that he could find such ladies to put him up for a few nights, on reaching Pattaya and realising the taxi would not accept the borrowed credit card as payment, asked the driver to pull when he passed the first farang he saw, he gets out the cab walks up to this stranger and say's "Oy' Jimmy, could you help me out with the cost of my taxi fare as I have left my wallet at home" when the stranger looks round and realises it is a BKK cab and the fair is going to be a little more than 35B say's no the guy then runs in to this building and threatens to jump...

Or

This is some guy who was arrested after the police were called to assist to evict him for non payment of rent, on realising he had a string of other unpaid bills and also had overstayed his 30days in the Kingdom handed him over to immigration, so when after securing funds from a compassionate relative or friend and after paying off his debt's, fines and buying a air ticket home slipped his guards at the airport while waiting for his flight home, found an illegal taxi tout who offered a ride to Pattaya...

I am not saying either of the above are anywhere near the true story but the second is more plausible.

But what I am getting at there is a small, a very small percentage of "Faranges" in Thailand who jump taxi's and buses, leave unpaid bins, cage money off everybody they can, take the services of some poor lady who provided a very affectionate night night of passion and not reward them, etc, these peoples activities brush off on us all where we just do not get the trust most of us deserve.

I echo your thoughts.
