Ministry develops software to counter pornography in colleges

BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Education is piloting the use of software to prevent students from accessing pornographic materials from school and college computers.

Mr. Prasert Kaewphet, the ministry's information technology advisor, told TNA on Sunday that for the past couple of years the ministry had been liaising with an Indian company, and that it had come up with software which censored nud_e pictures immediately they appear on computer screens.

"Wherever this problem occurs, the ministry is blamed", Mr. Prasert said.

"If this software works, we will propose that the ministry makes a large-scale purchase of it", he added.

The software is particularly useful, as it does not require schools and colleges to key in the names of individual website that they wish to ban although specific websites can be unlocked if the education institution wishes to use them for the purposes of sex education.

The software is initially being piloted in one school and one university in Bangkok, and the results will be assessed once the first semester of the 2005 academic year begins.

A second pilot programme will then be conducted in a further 50 schools, and if successful, the Ministry of Education will then choose to purchase the software for the 500,000-plus computers housed in the schools and colleges under its jurisdiction.

The total package from the Indian company is expected to cost Bt50-100 million.

Be assured that a good chunk of that 100 million baht spent didn't make its way too far out of Thailand... :o

Isn't it freeware out there that can filter those pics?

Perhaps, but how many poo-yai bank accounts can be padded if they were to use freeware? :o

Keep your hands off my hardware!! :o:D

By the way there is a iShield programme that does this already

from Vivid Fish

Yes I know it is an interesting choice of name!!

Cost 1000 baht, saving the government 99,999,000 baht!!

Mind Control. Seems to become a fast spreading disease. even some mods on TV seem to be slightly affected lately. :o

Wow... when I first saw the thread title I thought it meant that they had somehow developed software that PREVENTED porn from being made AT the colleges...

hahahahaha... :D

misguessed the content of the article completely...:o

If the number of VCD's being made available is any indication, a fair amount of the porn is being made at these places... :D:D

better not, else they get the idea to cut the lines which go out of Thailand.

Outside is anyhow dangerous. An "only in Thailand Internet" would be the solution.

Not to worry. I'm sure one or more students have already developed a workaround. :o
