How To Change A Media File To Mpeg

depends what the media file is - more info needed.

but why would you want to? you will lose quality as the other codecs are far superior to mpeg. Converting swells the size of the file enormously, and reduces quality.

Set up a cheap 2nd hand old computer with a TV out on the video card if you want to play stuff on your main TV.

Pandit, not all codecs are the same, and their quality or use depends on how/what you convert. Mpeg in general is a middling codec that can give good results with fair compression. It is also very flexible in that you can scale from lousy VCD quality to great DVD quality, depending on your settings. It's widely accepted and the most compatible.

DV is also a codec, and it gives great quality, but at the price of 12GB per hour of video. RM is a good codec for streaming and small file sizes, but horrible for quality. Quicktime is also nice, but is most popular on the Mac platform. Intel Indeo was the common codec for video capturing a few years ago. Motion Jpeg was also pretty popular but had the disadvantage of jpeg artifacts. The list goes on and on.

The codec that people seem to like most is Mpeg4 and its variants (Xvid, Divx, etc). It's also very flexible, and can give varying quality from lousier-than-VCD to near-DVD quality. However, it's not for everyone and is not yet totally platform independent. The existance of variants also means compatibility issues. There are some standalone DVD players appearing that can play Mpeg4 files, but they're not widespread and twice as expensive as normal players.
