I choose the latter designation. What will they call this decade anyway? What was the last decade called the ouwties, the nowties? Something like that.

twenty ten is my preference but that's mainly cos it's quicker! :)

I will say two thousand ten

But I am sure I will sign checks 2009 till at least March 2010 :)

I think it'll stay two thousand and ten for about half the year until people get used to saying twenty-ten. All of us spent most of our lives telling the year with two two-digit numbers, so I think we'll relapse into it.

Twenty ten for me.

I didn't have any trouble saying nineteen ten.

:):D

Wow, this poll is close. The result is surprising me.

Yes, but I was hoping for a bit more involvement from the TVers.

In the end the media will decide. I expect that "two thousand and ten" will prevail, to conserve the momentum of this millenium. Unfortunately there is nobody left alive who can tell us what happened in the years 1,000 and and 1,010. But maybe there are a few oldies who can say whether 1901 was referred to as "nineteen oh one" or "nineteen hundred and one"?

However, so far I have no heard any broadcast referring to next year in either form? Anybody else?

Mobi, Kanwin, Endure, Blondie,

One of which will kindly provide an answer :)

I guess for me it will be a mix of both

A real old timer (like meself) would likely say, "nineteen ought one".

Did anybody here ever say, "One thousand nine hundred ninety nine"?

I suppose not.

We used to say nineteen oh one. Ought is an Americanism, when I used to shoot I'd buy American shotgun cartridges with "double ought" on the box, but we still called them "double oh".

I'm an American so it is acceptable for me to use an Americanism. Those .12 guage double oughts were something else.

The only time I use "double oh" is when I am spelling door, or book, or hoop, or......Well, you get the idea. :)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I only bought a box to show off or in case I ever went pig shooting.

I appreciate how languages differ with isolation and distance, ought was probably originally nought. Double nought as in double zero.

I read how a collector of old English and Scottish folk songs went to the Appalachians/Ozarks and recorded songs there that had been lost in their place of origin. They were still virtually identical to when they had been brought to America by pioneers three or four hundred years ago. Maybe the English used to say ought back then as well.

It was considered naughty to say naught in the days or yore. It was thus changed to "ought" for political correctness.

No more research is required.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I only bought a box to show off or in case I ever went pig shooting.

We have many firearms as I was a competitive shooter for years.

But....

The only firearm we keep loaded here is loaded with 12ga 00

But it will be used on 2 legged pigs only. ( hopefully not needed as it will leave an awful mess )

I never considered the guns I owned to be weapons, they were tools that were used to remove varmits or fill the pot or feed the dogs. When I sold them or gave them away... anyone who keeps a gun in the same house as kids is a braver man than me, it never occurred to me to keep one for self defence.

I've lived or travelled widely in countries like Thailand, the Philippines and Cambodia and never once considered picking up a gun to keep the locals at bay.

OK, a lot of people would be alive today if they had had a gun in the house, but a lot would be alive if there hadn't been as well.

two thousand and ten, will be the way I say it.

twenty ten sounds like some kind of bet or something.

im a formal kind of guy, so outa my way you scoundrals :)

I do not have kids in the home now but did. They were all capable & informed about firearms & reloading.

As for using firearms for self defence... I too hope I never have the need.

But if I or my wife does.... I find it vastly preferable to retrieve her from a police department after questioning than from a morgue after an autopsy.

I suppose it comes down to whether you can absolutely trust your kids to do absolutely the right thing at any given moment, but then I'm not sure that I would have wanted kids like that anyway.

An excellent opportunity for symbolism and freak event('s).

How is this so important?

Does the OP have a bet on or something?

You have to understand numbers and symbols.

Nope, just wondered how folks around here will be uttering the new year.

I suppose it is not really important, but what is?
