Have crossed in to Malaysia south of Sadao a few times.

You will need an English translation of the blue book for the car.

Have bought Malay insurance both at the duty free shop in no man's land and at the shop houses on the right hand side just after the boarder. Can't remember which one was better or cheaper… :)

At these shop houses you will also need to buy a sticker for the Malaysian road tax.

Can't remember exactly, but think it was somewhere around 7-800 THB for the obligatory month.

Shouldn't be much more for your 5 weeks.

As a note, we had the blue book translated at a translation service shop, and last time they were not all that happy with that.

I would recommend getting an official translation from the department of Land Transportation.

cost depends on your car's gasoline consumption. price of gasoline in malaysia is almost half price of what you pay in thailand. you need to translate your car registration card into english and your wife's driving licence into english (driver's driving licence). malaysia accepts thailand driving licence (english translated version) or commonwealth country's international driving license (no translation required if it's in english)

parking per day in johor baru is about 50 baht to 200 baht. the road tax issued at malaysian road transport dept near the thai border is free. you only pay for insurance coverage . the first shop nearest to the R.T.D. is the cheapest. there is 2 guy at the R.T.D counter. Avoid the younger guy (about 23 - 27 yrs old). Make a u turn and Park your car near the RTD enterance after you had purchased the insurance and stick the sticker ( car registration number tanslation) on your car. wind down your car window if your window film is darker than 50% and pray that the younger RTD officer don't give you problem. This young a*s Hol* sometimes is in the mood to refuse you entry unless you tear off the dark film on your window. the road toll from thai border to johor is approx. 1000 baht (one way) speed trap is active every day at fixed spot strech unless it is raining. ( malaysian police is not rain proof). max speed is 110 km/h on the high way but certain stretch it shows 90km/h..

speeding ticket is on the spot and police do not accept cash (legally) on the spot. fine = rm300 (legally).if payment is made on the spot, = :D:) .

malaysian police are kind, they negotiate. never offer pocket money in singapore. ( you might land yourself in jail)however, if you apologise sincerely to the singaporean police for traffic offence, they normally let you off with a warning. I used to park at the johor baru ferry terminal, duty free building (ferry to Indonesia batam island terminal). Most of the illegal taxi driver (black areas) in malaysia are worse than phuket's tuk tuk driver so,be very careful.

I lived in Singapore for some time and visited Msia few times, I will reccomend to take air plane... Take air asia and in 2hrs you are in heaven without 1000km driving on highway where can see only palm trees, this is not EU, car can have problem, you will enjoy sauna on highway, I will not leave any car in Johor Bahru for more than few mins...

Keep your Benz at home at least you will have something what will push you back home... Singapore is civilized country, no cows on the road, no motorcycles driving at night without lights against you...

Taxi prices are reasonable...

Now I realized I miss Singapore so much :D

my 2 cents...

Radek

P.S.: my Benz waiting for me back home in EU :)
