Is War Fair?

Featured Replies

And how did you fare in the last combat zone?

Was it a fair cop, by a fair-haired cop?

Last month we received an official communication from the VietNam War Ministry.

Here is their letterhead.

Sorry Humph, don't get it!?!

Warfare (Ministry of)

War ..... Fair (A strange misunderstanding of the English words - but to have as the letterhead of a government ministry ????)

Just playing around with the sound of words - nothing better to do.

It's 6.30 and I have a 40km drive home - an hour and a half on the roads outside Saigon, including a ferry ride across the Nga Be river.

And a party later tonight.

Life is tough.

And I'm rambling.

Sorry Humph, don't get it!?!

I got it... just a play on words. And, war is fair... at least it is for the victor. But, the Vietnam war wasn't so fair for a bunch of unfortunates who got caught up in it through no fault of their own... either because they got drafted by the American war machine or had the misfortune to be living in Vietnam at the time.

Not to mention the Laotians who had 2 million tons of high explosive dropped on them.

However is war fair? Depends on the outcome, not always the victors and I guess when you add up all the factors, I am not sure who wins, except those that come after the peace and certainly not those that survived.

You can always tell who " won" the war, by who was allowed to right the history of the conflict and whom in that history are allowed to take the moral high ground and blame the "losers" for starting it.

Simple really.

And the letter is dated December "two'th"

Minor things like that are common in many countries where English is not the primary language - my point on this was really that the printed letterhead of a major government department should really have a little more concern for accuracy.

I could quote a hundred examples a day of the fouling of the English language (but that would include the Aussie and US examples)(and the mis-spellings on TV), but this one just annoys me.

Gollygosh and darn it - I do have my dander up. But what the heck, I'm off tomorrow!

Maybe it was written by the 'two'th Fair'y

You're just an old bear, Humphrey, and I'm familiar with those. :)

My buddy always has a complaint with the people who use "loose" instead of "lose".

who was allowed to right the history of the conflict

Is that right the history or write the history?

Either could fit. :)

But who'se going to believe an old croc? They always have their mouth open waiting for handouts...
