Why Doesn't Thailand Welcome Foreign Volunteers?

Featured Replies

Thais usually, often, apparently prefer that foreigners not volunteer. Maybe they don't want our help, and maybe they prefer (not) to do it themselves. I'm often wrong.

Could they be suspicious of motives? That seems pretty common these days.

Maybe. Although surely assigning a visa (or something) to their category would help the authorities to regulate it.

This might be one of those questions where the only answer is: "This is Thailand"

Think men and maps. Is it a face thing?

Any reason for no reply button on your opening post PB?

Regards.

To be fair there's the latent 'we know better' attitude which some volunteer organisations work so hard to cultivate. In addition, I do take the view that alien assistance as I described it elsewhere is very unpopular here, at virtually every level.

The no quote no reply button is another innovation from the web crew we all so love.... <sigh> to stop people cluttering up the place with text. Of course how it affects a multiple page thread has not yet been considered....

no quote no reply missing buttons sucks if you want to quote a specific phrase in the OP. I'm suprised no one has removed this feature yet. :)

I remember a group of women marching for some perceived womens right issued 10-12 years back in Chiang Mai. Seems to me it was about thirty souls walking down Taepae Rd. The oddity was more than half were farangs. Couldn't see what right they were marching for in Chiang Mai that they didn't already have.

Try cut and paste!

i know of many many, and have a few friends who have come to Thailand as volunteers.

i cant say what percentage it makes (compared to those that come on working visas), but it would suggest that Thailand is not completely resistant to having foreign volunteers.

the other group I see a lot of are interns....albeit not volunteers, but some perform similar functions and are also unpaid (they tend to come on educational visa I think.....)

And if they never had them how dare they demand them anyway. If we wanted women with rights we'd have stayed in Farangistan.

Don't get me started!

Having grown up in a Monarchy that was later overthrown....I am of the mind that the Thai's are doing the right thing.

They should keep the door as closed as possible. It is one thing to allow some entry for visitation & economical profit. But they should keep the line deeply drawn so that door does not come off its hinges.

PS:I agree that the old software that allowed quoting the original question should be re-instated.

Most realize they should crop it if it is too long.

There are two separate threads that have morphed from the OP, the original intent I wont comment, as for the morph diluting the original intent, I would suggest taking it to forum support along with the other 30 threads regarding it.

Moss I've told you thousands of times not to exaggerate :) There's only one thread which has disappeared off the front page [missing q & r buttons].

SC nice try but no cigar, since such cut and paste exacerbates the risk of falling foul of the rules here, though more often observed in the breach the observance, of not 'editing' a source quote/reply base. Further how many do know that to create a quote they need to type [ quote] This is a non working quote [ /quote] {spaces intentional} as I did on the first line, I wonder?

Editing a post to the point(s) you want to comment upon is still encouraged.

Thailand really, officially makes volunteering by foreigners illegal. They don't really want your help, so don't do it. Let Thais do it. And when they don't, blame Thai culture and Thais. In my opinion.

I know a place in Thailand where geriatric gents with a penchant for black shirts are welcomed as volunteers with open arms (and oxygen cylinders) every day - Pattaya's Foreign Tourist Police Volunteers.

But I suspect you mean more altruistic volunteers than these?

Maybe so Trav, one dedicated thread, but a multitude of snipes in a myriad of posts.

However people cannot seem to grasp the merits of editing, which is fineas long as it does not alter the context of the post, there is still far too many clustered quotes, even in OtB, where posters really should no better.
