What Is Bedlam About

Bedlam described by Lewis Carroll
Alice: But I don't want to go among mad people.

The Cat: Oh, you can't help that. We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.

Alice: How do you know I'm mad?

The Cat: You must be. Or you wouldn't have come here.

Alice: And how do you know that you're mad?

The Cat: To begin with, a dog's not mad. You grant that?

Alice: I suppose so,

The Cat: Well, then, you see, a dog growls when it's angry, and wags its tail when it's pleased. Now I growl when I'm pleased, and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad.

The REAL Bedlam, as described by Wikipedia:

The Bethlem Royal Hospital of London is a psychiatric hospital ..... is recognised as the world's first and oldest institution to specialise in the mentally ill. It has been variously known as St. Mary Bethlehem, Bethlem Hospital, Bethlehem Hospital and Bedlam.

The word bedlam, meaning uproar and confusion, is derived from its name. Although the hospital is now at the forefront of humane psychiatric treatment, for much of its history it was notorious for cruelty and inhumane treatment – the epitome of what the term "madhouse" connotes to the modern reader.

Let's Bedlamise this thread. Anyone got an irrelevant post about a fat woman a mangy dog and a bus full of right wing American Christians?

It sounds like the perfect country-western song:

http://www.leoslyrics.com/listlyrics.php?hid=Jbrh7z8zNUE%3D

:D It does indeed.

(BTW LRB....I hope you realised it was a joke about LRB the band :) ) :D

Thanks for the reminder that I hate country-western music! :)

Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Sharecropper,

You are a brave person to question the ins and outs of Bedlam after a few posts. Over time you will find that we are a good array of odd people with all sorts of interesting things to say about alot of things.

And you will probably have a nice new nickname too!! CameACropper comes to mind!!! (not nastily meant)

Welcome and stop being so serious...

Nicely Purred Pats..................

Aww, thanx :)

I had a chill pill photo for him, but couldn't find it. Probably took it myself.

Oh no, here it is - a bit furry, sorry. Been stuck behind my ear since someone here told me to take one a while ago

To the Original Post:

What would you like Bedlam to achieve?

Not sure about status, post count means nothing, simply because posters have got here through the games and riddles threads and once here, posts are accumulated through TLW & RP's, as for rubbish, you need not look far.

be relocated to a more “fun” general section without too much trouble.

I can't agree with that, it would just become just any other general forum with potless post posts from everybody, at least you get a better quality of potless post here.

As for the less reputable sites, whatever that might mean, I am not sure there is any status conferred, or maybe I am not elevated enough to fully enjoy said status, but there is room for all forums, dependent on clientèle.

Maybe if Mods (or members were encouraged to)

AFAIAA, they and us are, and I don't think it would detract from other forums.

Maybe a more elitist feel to being/becoming a member might do it?

Or offer Bedlam members something? How about discounts at selected forum sponsors, per number of posts?

Elitist!? I think not. But if you are to receive something from posting you will get even more incessant nonsense, it would be like a bonus scheme and we all know what that creates.

Or is everyone happy with it as it is?

It just feels moribund to me, but I will keep at it.

It could be improved, so I encourage your involvement.

Good Luck

Moss

And it is nice to have a relatively limited number of posters......you don't come back the next day and have to read 100 posts that have been made since your last post.

And there is a comaraderie as one gets to know the others.

Very true HC, although not exclusive to the General Forums, I was involved in a thread in OtB and when I returned it was difficult to get back in line, otherwise I agree with you, and you do get a sense of getting to know people in here.

If nothing else, it is a better class of flame.

Thanks for your interesting observations Mossfiinn.

You asked: What would you like Bedlam to achieve?

I really don't have an answer to that. I am thinking "this is an elevated forum but it feels predominantly like a silly-post backwater. Who can be happy with that. What is the benefit of being a Bedlamite and what does Thai Visa want it to be for".

It feels a little ill-thought out, as indeed may my comments (and syntax) be.

But maybe I am looking at it from the wrong angle.

You said: As for the less reputable sites, whatever that might mean, I am not sure there is any status conferred, or maybe I am not elevated enough to fully enjoy said status

What I was maybe too politely referring to, in terms of elevated status on other sites, was the ability to view and post full nudity photos and basically anything goes in the elevated sections of sites like Secrets and Pattaya Addicts etc, which does give non-elevated members something to aspire to.

And before anyone gets up with a hangover and fails to read my original post, I was saying this is inappropriate for TV, but it shows other sites elevated forums/(a?) do have something tangible that their non-elevated members aspire to enjoy. With Bedlam there isn't really anything.

You said (re rewarding posters by post numbers on here): But if you are to receive something from posting you will get even more incessant nonsense, it would be like a bonus scheme and we all know what that creates.

And I take your point!

Why don't TV start by creating weekly/monthly competitions or something on the site? That might encourage more traffic to it.

full nudity. now thats class. certainly elevates something but status isn't one of those things. thanks but no thanks.

Yes, and as he said inappropriate for ThaiVisa. Just an example, albeit a poorly chosen one.

That's the challenge though - with ThaiVisa of the ilk that it is, what could be added as an extra incentive in this restricted area? I would suggest it being ad-free perhaps, but that's probably got as much chance of happening as the nud_e pics have...

Thanks for reading my whole post and for your comments.

I was hoping for a more infomed or enlightened contribution from Thai Visa Admin people, but there you go.

Just one observation - the nudity reference wasn't a poorly chosen example, it is a matter of fact, on the other boards.

Oh dear, being antagonistic is probably not a good idea. I did read your whole post, you see. Just found the irony of it all rather deliciously stupid.

Bedlam is what you make it, if you want something interesting then feel free to post it. If you like banal then go for it. But to sit there and moan about what it is rather than contribute in a meaningful way is IMO, rather pointless.

To paraphrase Popeye, Bedlam is what it is.

Why does it have to be anything in particular just by the fact that it's posters have made 500 posts elsewhere?

You might find Outside The Box more interesting.

Is it really an 'elevated' forum? It used to take 500 posts to get in here, but now all you have to do is be a paid member and it becomes available immediately ($199 for a life-time platinum membership, ad free).

As to the OP, Bedlam has been bubbling along nicely for a few years now, and there's always OTB if cropper wants some brain fodder. I suppose that the more relaxed moderation is something. Although one could point out the fact that there are plenty of other boards with far less moderation, the difference here is that people in Bedders generally self-moderate and prefer things on a fairly friendly level. Those who don't like it here don't tend to make much of a fuss, they just disappear back to General or their local forums or put on their gloves and play in the seedier boards.

Oi....a couple of us have been trying to bedlamise this thread....why did you have to go and ruin our efforts?

Great oxymoron in your first paragraph, but thank you for commenting.

I actually think my post is neither moaning, pointless nor a meaningless contribution to the forum.

  • Author
Not that it's important....but I can't see the oxymoron.

The contradiction in saying antagonism is bad, then being antagonistic.

Was I being antagonistic? I don't think so. I was merely suggesting its not a good idea. Regardless of what you may seem to think I am actually quite a reasonable person so was merely pointing out to you that you probably wouldn't get a good response from admin by being so. Bedlamites tend to have more respect for each other and therefore generally have far better manners than one sees in the rough and tumble of say the Pattaya forum. A suggestion you might want to take under consideration. You certainly won't get in trouble for bad manners here as quickly as you do elsewhere but it probably will make your stay here more pleasant if you consider the alternative of having good manners.

There you go again. Inferring some sort of bad manners.

I'm trying to have a constructive dialogue here and this pejorative baiting is neither helpful or appropriate, Bedlam rules or not.

I like bedlam because i recognize the names here, whereas elsewhere there seems to be new people joining everyday.

nud_e photos? Hmm. I like to keep my imagination running... But endure in a fairy dress with his magic wand would be amusing...

Sharecropper, one thing i like about here is the fact that i sometimes laugh out loud at the comments made - none of yours have actually hit the funny bone yet.

But i am sure you are a nice person.

I have to agree with you there, Patsycat. There is so much raunchy nudity available on internet today that it is boring. I don't even look in at the cute butts topic. I can see just as good in real life and there is a lot to choose from.

The anticipation and a slow build up makes anything sexual so much more exciting. When it's constantly in your face you tend to ignore it after a while. But, maybe that's because I'm just getting old. When I was 19 I was a walking hormone. Too much of anything gets boring after a while.

Response to Post 10

am taking Bedlam and Outside the Box together for this thread (I mean why are the showstopper threads ‘I like New Zealanders because…’ and “I Like Brits and Aussies because…” in the Outside the Box section, which is purportedly for more serious stuff?).

I don't think there is a straight cut off between the two forums, but where we do agree, is with the 'I like', threads, it has got a little silly now.

As for being a Haven, you get a better class of troll in here and as for having a general forum free for all, I am wholly against it, there are a multitude of other internet forums for that discussion.

The amount of posters is purely by choice, if they want to join in but feel it is presently not to their liking, set about change and diversify the topics, comraderie, well you do get to know somebody on here, and you sometimes let certain nonsense go, whereas in an other forum with someone you didn't know, you may well get a different reaction.

The rant, now we have something completely different and it is used to blow steam, rather than anything more serious than that, as for miggy and Ian, I am not entirely sure what that is all about, I would guess wth limited information, it is the public photos and invasion of privacy, but without all the facts it is hard to come to a definitive conclusion.

Off Topic, generally known as Bedlamisation is the fun part, it's like a box of quality street, you just don't know what you are going to get next.

If it was a success, there would be more posts, and more senior posters would be on here. They are not, so does TV judge Bedlam to be a success or a failure by whatever yardstick they had when they set it up?

Does anyone in TV have any comments on the rationale behind having the Bedlam board, and whether the above is enough to justify its existence in its current format?

Success isn't judged by quantity here, otherwise you could say General is a succes and it is a troll fest full of repeated questions by the same reincarnated posters, as I am sure you know and if the more senior posters wanted to get involved they could, others just want to stay in their specialist forums and others have ventured in here and I think they thought they were not treated with the same respect accorded them by certain groups, so left in a huff.

There is plenty of justification for this forum, but should it evolve, in my opinion yes, entry level is too low, although that has been restricted now with certain subs being post count restricted, you can pay at the door, something I don't agree with and certain threads should be curtailed, but these are my opinions and I don't think they have much support here.
