Which is a better SUV? Anyone owns any of these models?

Ford used unit is around 800~900k baht for a year old model 3 litre V6. A steep discount from the original sticker price of 1.399 million baht.

Fortuner is relatively new, so used unit still too early to lappear in the car mart.

Test driven the Ford 2.3 model. Quite a smooth and nice vehicle, so the 3 litre should be better.

Toyota should command a better value since it is a 2.7 litre with 7 spacious seats and real air con blower.

With the New ford u have 5 years warrenty and 3 years with Toyta but with ford after the 5 years your cost going to rocket. PM in one year i just bought one Fortuner Black and its great for now...

Here in the states my parents have a 6cyl. Ford Escape. They had larger tires fitted to the car, and still get around 25 mpg. They are very pleased with the SUV, and every time I have driven it, I have been pleased. They have never had any mechanical problems with the vehicle.

I am happy to see the low used valur of the Ford Escape in Thailand, because I think it would be a good truck to have over there.

Just ordered a Escape 3.0 and yep its around 350K more than the Fortuner,however when I test drove the Fortuner in the parking lot(thats al I could get) I found it a bit big and my wife refused to drive it as she finds the view over the bonnet daunting.I also did not like the fact that the rear seats fold sideways for stowage,thereby reducing rear loading volume.

As with a a local built Toyota it sounded a bit tinny when closing the doors and the door trim inside is very plasticky.

I found the Ford more solid. :o

I've got a 3.0L Escape, fantastic car, don't need 7 seats so the space is fine, I'm 6'4" and leg room is fine, love the sunroof and cruise contol. Built on a mono-quoque chassis so better comfort than a Fortuner which is on a truck ladder chassis. Not a true off roader like the Fortuner, but handy all the same. Fantastic power 200HP V6, bit juicy but I don't care.

Got mine used for 900K for a 2003 (35,000KLMs) in near new condition, warranty is good for another year, and I'm buying a 2 year extended warranty for 37K just in case, it is a Ford afterall. Love my motor! Better looking and better equipped than the Mazda Tribute too.

Good luck, get a Ford.

Fortuner is supposed to be more capable off-road than the mini SUVs like the CRV / Escape / etc.

Also, if you've got kids, the 7 seats is good.

However - I think the Escape is a good car, and it's a matter of personal preference. If you're happy with the Escape you saw, go for it.

As for the found on road dead quip - I heard that 20 years ago in the UK, and think it relates to British-built fords from the 70s and 80s when some of the cars coming off the production line were true lemons. I think quality control in the factories is a LOT better these days.

I've now done around 5k in my Fortuner and I am very pleased with the car. Comments (above) about the build quality being tinny and plasticky surprise me. The build quality as far as I am concerned is VG and on a par with any Western built vehicle and should be for a car that is planned to be exported.

I specifically bought the gasoline version due to my aversion to diesels in pax cars and have not regretted it.

The car is quite high geared (Auto) and that makes for low engine RPM at cruise speeds and the car is quiet to drive. Yes, I too intended that my diminutive Thai wife should drive it but she does find it too daunting; the view over the bonnet is restricted for vertically impaired persons. Also, judging the left hand wing postion in space (fender for our USA cousins) takes some experience.

The ride quality is a compromise due to the ladder frame (Pick Up Based vehicle) and solid rear axle but the coil springs in place of leaf springs on the back end do help smooth out the bumps.

Mine was delivered with the tyres at 45psi (I found later when I checked them) so driving away from the showroom I concious that the ride (compared to a CRV) was pretty bouncy. However, reducing the TPs to 30 x 30 which is the Toyota recommended pxs for the big tyres made a huge difference.

Most of the big Toyota agents have a test drive vehicle so get in and try it on an expressway at speed (make sure they get the TPs at 30 x 30 first) My agent told me that it was better to have the higher pressures because it used less fuel!

For 1.19 million Baht with full leather, twin airbags, ABS, reverse warning, trip computer, 6 CD/MP3 player etc it's good value. I did look at all the otherSUVs and I'm glad I bought the Fortuner.

Fuel economy, gently driven on a mix of city (BKK), expressway and long distance the trip computer tells me I'm getting 9.6 km/litre. The agent told me 10 was the manufactures figure.

Suck it and see but don't knock it until you've tried it.

Fortuner brochure says Double wishbone for the fronts and 4-link with Lateral Rod for the rear, contributing to bumpy ride?

I heard the ford drinks gasoline, so mileage is not as good.

I was at Mazda showroom on Rama 4 to see Mazda 3 when the sales asked me if I were interested in SUV (Tribute). I answered the sales I'd rather go for Fortuner if I were in market for SUV (I actually am). Then the sales answered back just like what some of you wrote, that Tribute is much smoother ride than Fortuner for Fortuner being based on pick up body/frame. Does above along with solid rear axle explain less-than-smooth ride comfort of Fortuner?

Also, does monocoque body of Escape/Tribute mean better crash/impact resistance than pick-up based ladder frame Fortuner?

And is there any reason to choose B100,000 more expensive diesel version Fortuner than benzine Fortuner?

Do you see B1.2 million for Fortuner with 20% excise tax inclusive a better value for money than 35% + excise tax (+ 5% import duty) Escape/Fortuner 2.3L at B1.5 million?

BTW, I just read on Japanese newspaper today that Toyota's global sales (consolidated financial statement including sales from Hino and Daihatsu it owns) as of fiscal year 2004 ending March '05 exceeded GDP of Thailand...

Hey Britmav, you use 95 or 91 in your Escape? I started out on 95 and found it to eager so moved to 91 which makes a more smoother ride, any comments? apparently gasohol is fine in these engine too, don't want to risk it though!

I think the diesel version 3.0G is the cheapest. But for ride comfort, I suggest someone test drive and you seat on the rear seats to determine the ride comfort levels, do not let your wife or kids be the judge.

On paper, every manufactures trumpets their car is the safest, but it is best to drive carefully and not to take any chances. No drink driving and no speeding is the best.

Didn't they introduce 2.3l Escape precisely because 3.0l version was having very poor gas milage by Thai standards?

I think 2.7l Fortuner is a trick for those who refuse to drive diesels - the specs are not that impressive comparing to 2.0 and 2.4l Toyota engines used in Camry and Wish. Perhaps they went for low-end torque for off-roading.

I think 3l diesel engine also has better fuel economy.

Do you mean V6 3.0l Accord? Otherwise it's hard to believe that 3l SUV consume as little as 2.4l sedan, not to mention that Accord has the most fuel efficient engine in its class.

what about LOTUS ? loads of trouble,usually serious,. ive got a good one for Pontiac, but i cant afford another holiday ! :D
