The assassination option was never discussed - at least not in public. Ever since the 1970's and the early death of Allende in Chile, the Democrat-controlled US Congress specifically made assassinating foreign leaders againt US law (in reality, the only law that matters, sorry). You could argue if not for the Dems back then we could have taken out Saddam with one bullet and avoided the whole thing.
