Pump Water Uphill (tank-to-tank): What Pump Is Best?

Featured Replies

Hi there!

My house is set around 50m above (vertical distance) a shared well and water tank.

I built another tank in concrete next to my house and need to link both tanks (hose distance tank-to-tank is around 150m).

My question is what kind of water pump should I install next to the downhill tank to bring water up to my house concrete tank.

I don't mind having high pressure up there since my house is already equipped with pump and water system attached to my concrete tank.

Just would like to be able to send uphill at least 3-5m3 (3-5000L) within an hour or so.

Any suggestion or experience to share? (would prefer electrical pump)

Thanks

PS: my house is in Koh Phangan.

Besides selecting a pump which is not a big problem, have you thought about how to control the lower pump to stop and start when you need to transfer water.

Do you want this to automatic or will it be started / stopped manually.

Hi

I have 15m3 tank in concrete connected to my house. So I was planning to have a manual control on the lower pump running it once or twice per month, when needed.

If you are going to run a wire from your house to the pump anyway, I would consider an electric float switch (350baht) in your house tank, allowing pump to run every time you need approx 5 m3. Pump lasts longer if used more often for an hour or two.

That could have been a good idea but actually the downhill pump will not be connected to my house but directly to a general line which is much closer.

Then I would probably choose a pump able to deliver the required height +20%, but low capacity in m3/hour. Connect it to a timer (Panasonic 700 baht) alowing it to run an hour or so a day, and manual override when more water needed. Money saved on low cap pump, and lifetime increased because daily use.

For a long pipe like this, a oneway walve at 300 baht is essential close to pump

Purchase one of small pump units available with the external pressure tank, fit the house tank with a floatlevel control valve with the low level set maybe half full and the off position at somewhere near to a full house tank. The pump unit will sense when the float valve is open (low pressure on the pressure tank) and will shut the pump down when the house tank is full (high pressure on the pressure tank).

Simple arrangement - you might need to play round with the low and high level on the float valve to get the stop / start where you need it.

50 m height and 150 m distance with an external pressure tank pump? what brand name and model at what price?

I have had very good luck with Gorman Rupp. Their VG Series should fit the bill. Not cheap, but will outlast you with proper setup.

Grundfos with external pressure tank.

my 17k Grundfos pumps max 24 meters high as I recall, so question remains

Well, seems to me that Grundfos has more than 1 pump in their pump range. Would you like to check for yourself at www.grundfos.com

seems like a 3k pump with a 700 baht timer does the same job at fraction of the Grundfos price. I am a huge fan of Grundfos pumps for pressure watersupply for house, but no reason to invest this much for OP to move water from one tank to the other

No argument from me on your analysis, you can also save the bht700 by walking down the hill every 3- 4 days or what ever period is necessary and pushing the start button.
