Hi all - buying a new Vigo Prerunner smart cab which comes with 15" wheels as standard - the 4 door version comes with 17" wheels as standard.

Will the 17" wheels from the 4 door version fit straight onto the smart cab version - they both have 6 bolt holes.

My dealer says no they cannot be changed ??? I would have to buy after market wheels ???? Seems oddball.

Anyone had any experience with this.

Thanks.

Yes the 17" will fit on the prerunner.

No you can not have them changed as an extra on the new car as here in Thailand all car come as a package and you can't change anything.Hopefully in the next 50 years they will widen their vision.

First of all, good luck with your new truck, I bought exactly the same truck last august. first thing i did was stick 18's on it, they fit no problems.

If you want the standard 17's that come from the 4-door maybe it is worthwhile checking at some of the wheel shops as people often trade their old wheels in when buying new shinier rims. I would have thought there's a fair chance there are some 17in toyota wheels around in some shops. Good luck.

When changing wheel sizes like that, are there problems with the accuracy of the speedometer? Or are things more sophisticated nowadays?

i put on 20 inch wheels and the speedo shows correct according to my gps...

It also shwed correct when i swapped the jazz wheels with some 18 inch ones...

Ps.. Someone said that you should check up on your brakes if you change to larger wheels...

20-25k is going price for Vigo 17" original brand new, and you probably get 12k for your 15" brand new

Had 15in one's on my vigo found them a god sent. As the tyre's are very fat it's impossible to clump the rim's on the curb's. The ride is great. Other than the look of the thing. Why spend all the cash. It's a great car but not a Merc or Bmw. Just an idea save the cash and get a Sat/Nav.

Is that the going price for rims included the tires?

Do they fit on a Navara? :)

Baskje, if your buying a Calibre it will come with 16x7 wheels and 255/70 tyres as standard, that not big enough for normal road use!!.

Well if you do decide to upgrade your wheels, PM me and I will take your standard ones off you - for a fair price :)

I found the 15's were unstable and the original tyres offered very little grip, changing to a narrower profile tyre with the bigger wheels i found really improved the handling and stability. If you have the cash, then i think its not only a change that makes the truck look better but manoevre better aswell. each to their own though eh!

yes, original 17" Vigo/Fortuner with the new roadbiasd tyres. new pickup buyers trade them in at wheelshops for 18-20" wheels at 60-100k.

Navara is the only 6 bolt pickup/suv they dont fit. Navara is also running Dunlops in a size not easily available

If you want one to look better and handle better get the four door one in the first place. It's a pick up and they dont handle well anyway. If you read the Toyota book tell's you to be careful as they are top heavy. And can turn over. That's of course if you have the cash. Also better resale value.

Are you sure the 4 door Vigo's have a better resale value? Keeping in mind they are dearer to start with. :)

Alot of people actually go for the 2 door smart cab because they want the longer(larger) loading area in the back.

Had a four door 4x4 Sold it end of last year to a chum. When I went to order new car the peep's in Toyota were falling over themself's trying to buy it from me, I ask them why wanted it so bad, the reply because every one want's one, and there's not many 4x4 4 door about, especialy one's owned by a farang. service ect. Two door. Two and a half door. Every were. Take your pick. If youve got to have the extra room in the back well you have a problem. The 4 door has 4foot 8in depth. They make more bit's to fit on the back than the 2.5 door. It's all down to the buyer and how much he want's to spend. Also what he/she want to use it for.

Have to say If it wasnt for loading up 2 sometimes 3 dirtbikes in the truck then I would have gone for the 4 door. But I really do need the space that the smart cab offers. Any passengers have to have quite short legs to get in my truck, not really an issue though in thailand!

Good point, didnt think of that. the tyres are 265/60 series. and loaded up with bikes and 2 people i guess would be near 400kg load. Nothings broken yet, although would be nice if someone could clarify that carrying these loads on these tyres is ok...

On the subject of chenging wheel sizes on a new Toyota vehicle, have you considered or checked out the warranty clause. As there is a 3 year warranty on a new Vigo Prerunner I would think it worth checking out.

Companies will attempt to find any excuse to avoid warranty claims.

I have a new 4 door prerunner and I am very pleased with the handling, a delightful change from our 2 year old Isuzu.

Happy motoring.

Havent read it in full but I asked them whether it would be an issue and they just said " why would it ". I told them that in england if an insurance company found out the car was anything other than completely stock they wouldnt pay out. The guy seemed baffled and told me not like that here. I havent ( luckily) had the chance to see what would happen if in the event of a claim they did notice the aftermarket rims. He also claimed that it would not effect the 3 year warranty on the vehicle, again havent had an opportunity to prove this either true or not true!

I wonder If anyone has had first hand experience?

I have done exactly what you are suggesting, I went to COCKPIT and they were great.

Actually I wanted 20 inch wheels but the price of a quality tire in Thailand is very high due to the fact that these tires are made out of the country.

So I put 17 wheels with Michelin tires and filled them with NITRO not air it makes a big difference!

When fitting bigger rims on a truck, isn't the max. load an issue? Can low profile tires on a 18 or even 20 inch rim carry the same load?

rims size, offset and load capacity is to be printed inside rim if approved in US (DOT) or EU (E). Some rims used on pickups can not carry the designed load, but who load their 18" or 20" shod pickup with one ton (1.000kg) anyway.

most agriculture pickups improve rear leafs and ride 15" reinforced, and load 1,5 ton

I would worry a bit about aftermarket wheel rims strenght. I have bought fancy wheels before that had stickers stating what they could or could not be used for. A guy l new in UK had wheel business and all his stock came from China for silly money :D .

Your original size rim and tyre combo add to the ride comfort of the motor, lower the profile, lower the ride comfort.

If you go for really big rims you increase the risk of buckling when hitting pot holes etc especially in a heavy truck cos tyre cannot absorb all the shock. But if your just a low speed poser, no probs. :)

to be honest, larger than 17" and lower than 65 profile on these old tech suspensions is posing only except for braking. reduced traction, increased risk of flipping and reduced comfort.

but it LOOKS AWESOME, so why not :D

Have you ever noticed that those salesman don't have a clue what they talking about, even if you ask them questions about the spec of the car they are selling? But for sure he would know everything about insurances. :)

Better to check it out yourself, most big insurance companies have a policy available in english language just have to ask for it.

"Bikerlou47" care to share what price you got for your new 17" Michelins? I need to change mine very soon, the original Bridgestone are only so so in grip. Need to look at other options. Thanks.

Digressing from the OP!!, but two door pickups do seem to outnumber the 4 door ones, anyone know the stats?

Be aware a four door is licensed/insured as a 'sedan'. Can't remember the difference in status/costs...but they are there.

It helps a little to be in a four door on country roads when the BIB are collecting for the ball.

Go for the dunlops.Think they called PT2.Had my bridgestones replaced by them some 20.000 kms ago and never regretted it.They are also cheaper as the others.

Thanks for all the feeback guys - yesterday the Toyota dealer offered to swap the original 15" for original Toyota 17" inch wheels/tires for 17,000baht and they will be fitted when I take delivery next week.

Sounds ok to me - cheers all :-)
