In my search for a second hand vehicle. I have been searching baht&sold also thai visa classified for a used pickup. After looking at several i am of the opinion they were in rough shape or overpriced. I am also surprised of how few are actually for sale on the 2 sites above. I am using these sites as in the past (in my home country usa) private sales always seemed cheaper then used car dealers. Now i have started searching one2car. They of course have a much greater selection of vehicles. They for the most part are cheaper then the expat vehicles listed on the sites mentioned above. Also most offer some sort of warranty. My question is any reason not to shop these dealers? Are their prices negotiable? If so is -10% a legitimate offer? Or are they the same as new car dealers where the price is the price?

dealers lack flexibilty and private sellers usually have a personal agenda. which one sounds like it has more haggling/low balling offer potentional to you?

If you are buying used, you are not expecting perfection so prepare for some Post-purchase expenses.

When I was looking for a yaris the dealer said I don't have one. I said thanks, and left, he followed me and asked for my number. I said why, you don't have the car I want. He looked puzzled. I went to the next dealer who said we don't have one, you can try a vios. <deleted>? I wanted a Yaris, I was clear and stated from the beginning, I WANT TO BUY A YARIS. not like I am window shopping. Then finally I find one privately through classified ads and have it delivered to my door with NO fuss at all. Oh, I tell a lie, she was an hour late due to traffic from BKK to Korat.

Private sales all the way baby!

I've also disposed of cars through free ads and found buyers fairly easily. I found a truck for a friend through a dealer and that has been trouble free for 18 months now. So I am condemming them out of hand. But she was in a hurry for a truck so we got the best deal on the day. I might have waited and shopped around more.

I guess i can lowball offer private sellers. Maybe some may get offended. In regards to your truck purchase. Did you get a discount off the asking price? If so how much?

The reasons not to shop at second-hand dealers are numerous and well documented on threads in this forum by other users. Expect to be charged well over market-value for a vehicle and the peace-of-mind which buying from a dealer is supposed to bring over going private is marred by nation-wide persistant use of fake parts to facilitate budget repairs, particularly on popular cars like Toyota and Honda.

I think -10% is a legitimate offer to a dealer. The warranty is seldom more than three months, the downpayment usually includes insurance so there is scope for a 10% discount from the initally stated price. Never let a dealer sort insurance for you, do it yourself, either online or through a broker.

I am not sure how well documented it is in the forum but i will do a advanced search. In regards to price the dealers seem to advertise prices well under falang private sale ads. I also dont not know what fake parts are? If you are saying when they do a repair that they use something other the OEM parts? That surley would eliminate 90% of all used cars here and in america..

Is there a place that advertises thai private sales??

The "fake" parts are non-genuine parts? Just had my honda aircompressor replaced - the genuine part was over 2x the non genuine part (I got the non genuine Japanese made part). Given the cost difference, I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer uses non-genuine parts.

He probably was (puzzled); had you given him your number he could have called around or called you if he was offered one. I sold my four year old Yaris recently to a dealer (430,000 baht) who was obviously after that particular make, model and colour for a buyer as while we were going home from the bank after the paperwork had been done he had a number of phone calls including one where his side of the conversation was "I'm in it now, everything's fine, dealer service, I should be with you in an hour"!

There are good and bad dealers whether you are buying or selling, just as there are good and bad private sellers (and buyers!). Shop around.

Used car dealers offer a warranty?? I guess that is something private sellers can't / won't do.

Can someone list the pros/cans of buying from a tent / private?

The dealer get the commsion from the insurance, but the brooker get it as well. There is no broker work for free. Do it by your self online? Not sure if this is possible in LOS. And if so, the price will be the same, because the insuracne keeps the commsison. They not hand over commissions to the customer. So finally it doesn't matter.

Dealers overvalued: I don't think so. Prices are controlled by Finance Companies. Look at the "marked cars" like Toyota, Honda, Isuzu, etc. See prices at:

[email protected] "Dealers

www.taladrod.com Private, Home Sellers and "Mini Dealers, (which say that there are private)

Prices for Japanese Cars are exactly the same, unless some older Junk, like Chrysler Neon, for example. They are sometime cheap, because of their lousy condition, no dealer traded them in. Remember allways: You get what you pay for. There is no such a thing that you get a Jazz for 200'k, for example, because any finance company would give at least 340 to 450 for it (depend on model and year).

I bought a secondhand car off a private seller who advertised his car on taladrod.com.

The car was advertised at a very reasonable price and when I went to view it there was clearly plenty of work needed doing on it. The seller handed me the keys for a test drive so off we went just myself and my girlfriend and drove it to the mechanic to see how much it would cost to put right.

Anyway the mechanic had a good look over it and gave us a quote for 6000baht to put it right so again off we trundled back to the seller and got a 15000baht discount after haggling.

I live in a small town in Isaan and the people must be very trusting because I have never been given the keys to a car and told to take it where ever I wanted (including a mechanic) with just a motorbike as deposit.

Anyway to cut a long story short I have now had the work done and am more than happy with my purchase.

Sorry can I just add, as you probably know there are many con artists about and private sellers who are clearly not private sellers.

For example in the thai visa classifieds there was a car being "sold because they were moving back to Germany" and another advert on the same page by the same poster asking for "cheap cars any age and condition". These people are always advertising cars on Thai Visa and making money by doing it, its not against the rules but a little dishonest in my view.
