The rice was being left out in the sun for a few hours to get hot. Apparently, the weevils don't like it (getting hot or UV light?) and come out of the rice. The rice was then cooked and mixed with left over chicken bits and fed to the mountain dogs at the top of Toe Sae Hill in Phuket. They wolfed it down.

The rice weevil Sitophilus orizae (3mm) is very well studied as it is one of the most destructive pests of stored grains. The female can lay up to 400 eggs in her 4 month life.

When the food runs out, just start eating yourselves.

Just now, I found a huge snake in my kitchen.

Jumped in terror on the kitchen table but then realised, he/she was quite friendly.

So took some photos and then took it out in the garden.

On my garden inspection of the new condo I am working at today I found that one of the newly installed palms had lost its crown in a short rain downpour earlier. I called the landscaping team and they were delighted to find.....

Adult red palm weevil and a couple of larvae (sometimes call sago grubs)

The workers got stuck in ripping the fronds apart and soon had loads of cocoons

Here is another grub alongside one which has nearly go to adulthood.

The gardeners were very happy.... extra protein for them tonight and I get a new palm tomorrow.

Tolsti.... these bugs are not good! .....

Red weevil Beetle, definitely not good, they almost wiped out the coconut palms on Samui and Koh Phangan a few years back....they used Pheromone traps to catch the males...

It is a problem in other countries too, I would suggest calling your local Agricultural dept.... Nature is not always good! It could be devastating if allowed to spread... in your area....

Don't rely on them being eaten! (seriously) !!!

I had never seen one of these before..... asked my landlord what it was .... he said water bug!

Sorry not so clear ...darn thing kept moving but notice the "M" just behind the head, looking the other way it would be a "W".... hence water bug!

No! They are quite harmless - and as they eat mosquitos, who knows, they may save you from that most deadly of all creatures.

Yes MH , I was thinking that myself and they are in an area of the garden that is not bothered by us humans or our creatures..

I think I will try and photodocument their life in the garden here as I have not seen them before. AND anything that eats mozzies are my friends !!

Hawk Moth on my palm tree. Maybe Elephant Hawk Moth (Deilephila elpenor), but not sure.

Gonna check my Desert Rose over the next few days for caterpillars. If I find any, prepare for some gruesome pictures!
