Exporting From Thailand- Do I Need A Registered Company?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm looking to start exporting small amounts of products to Canada. I was asked today if I had an export number? Now is this a requirement for me to get here in Thailand? Or can i just get a temporary one? Or even get by without one? In the long run is it advisable to get a registered number?

I will be shipping to a registered company in Canada. Do I need a registered company here in Bangkok? Or can I export without a problem?

Thanks in advance,

Nick

As a foreigner exporting goods from Thailand for commercial and profit-making purposes, it is highly recommended to register a Thai company as consequently apply for a work permit since this will categorize you as working. Moreover, since you will incur income from Thailand, it must be declared subject to taxation rules in Thailand and remitted to the Thai Revenue Department. However, if the purpose of exporting is for an individual for personal usage, not deriving any profit, then a Thai company is no longer necessary. Should you register a company for this purpose, you may set up a 100% export company in which you can hold as much as 98% shares in the company with the remaining 2% to two other shareholders/promoters.

Most likely, the export number that they asked from you is from an Export License. This is applied by a registered company in Thailand with a valid business registration and TAX ID number, not issued for an individual. This export license will contain a specific export number specifying the shipping company or the company facilitating the export, the type of goods allowed to be shipped, etc. As an individual, you normally would just contact a shipping company (e.g. DHL, FedEx and other local shipping/logistics company) and they will facilitate everything for you.
