For visa g/f need Birth Certificate but she tell me her mum change Christian name when she was 14 and only has original Birth Certificate at present. Does anybody know what we will need document wise for the visa as her ID will have diffeent name to Birth Certificate and also where we can obtain this information?

Many thanks

As her i.d. and passport have different name to her birth certificate then she will need the name change certificate for any visa application.

If she has now definitely lost it, she can apply for a duplicate at the Ampur where she (or her mum) registered the name change. It's a bit of a hassle and long winded affair, and may involve some 'tea money' so get her to have a good look for the original first.

Believe the home register should have any name change entered on it but not sure. If it does that should be sufficient evidence as that is a very important legal document here.

Yes, the name change will be recorded on the tabien bahn, and this may be acceptable to the visa section.

But once in the UK you will need it again. For ILR, UK citizenship (if she wants it), NI number, even a driving licence! All these (amongst others) require proof of identity, and you will have problems if there is no paper trail from the name on her birth certificate through to her current name! (i.e. birth cert - name change- marriage cert)

Obviously she cannot bring the tabien bahn with her and even if she could I doubt if people like the DWP will recognise and accept it.

She needs to find the original certificate, or get a duplicate.

I guess you folks have a phobia about birth certificates as a valid passport should be all that is ever required for proof of identity. Too many years of record keeping and not allowing for the majority of the world where birth certificates may not even be common. I am sure there is some alternative as many Thai never had a birth certificate and if they did records have often been destroyed by fire years ago. The US accepts alternatives but you are right the local DWP (whatever that is) probably would not have a clue. :o

But was thinking the Embassy might be able to issue some kind of paperwork on the basis of the home register.

I can't speak for the US, but I can assure you that in the UK a passport alone would not be sufficient in the examples I quoted. Nothing to do with my phobia, just government regulations.

No, they almost certainly wont. If anything they would simply tell her to contact the Ampur where the name change was registered.

BTW, DWP = Department for Work and Pensions. The UK government department that deals with employment, social security etc.
