May be of interest to many Kiwis in the LoS

I have always felt New Zealand was a lucky country.

This earthquack has brought iwis back to reality.

NZ sends aid to many places hit by natural disasters.

The first estimate for this one is $2,000,000,000.00.

Check out heaps more pix here.

"FIRST MAJOR DISASTER SINCE 1931" ???????

Didn't realise you were that much older than me Pete.

When in 1931 were you born?

Lucky no fatalities.

Will this affect the World Cup? Of course not. England will still win it.

With no casualties, I take it the Lion and the Witch are safe,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Any news on the wardrobe ?

( condolences sent in sensible bit at the top )

Yeah, not '31 tho' I am a pre WW2 baby.

My granny will clobber you.

Insinuating I was a disaster

I was the most wunnaful thing in her life, so there.

England's rugby team plays like the England soccer team, woefully.

Sorrrryyyyyyyy

I think you will find this dreadful disaster is God's way of punishing your loose forwards in particular, for constantly being off-side. Play fair and keep your houses, seems to be the message

(Edited to add condolences sent in serious bit yet again)

( Edited a second time to remind all our Kiwi friends that at all England's rugby games, we sing " Swing Low Sweet Chariot ", hence we are blessed. Just watch what the Pope does when Jonny hangs his boots, and there has never been a mere murmur at Twickenham, never mind a rumble )

Oi..You brought it up !!!!

LOL, Humph did...........he he

What on earth is stuffed into the ceiling of that house on the far RHS?

PS: Glad nobody was killed or seriously injured.

Just below is the wardrobe. I suppose you could be looking at a squashed witch and a dead Lion

Seems odd that they would be storing stuff up there. Sorry for my ignorance, did people actually live in that house? :ermm:

FYI........

The Dean Homestead is/was lived in, so sad.

This was another historic homestead, the first in the whole of the Canterbury region and where Christchurch now stands. Once-a-day at 2pm there is tour of the house.

William and John Deans who emigrated from Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in the 1830s,and John's wife Jane from Auchterflower, Ayrshire.

The Wallaby coach, Robbie Deans is a member of the family.

This grand homestead, begun in 1856, was the home of Canterbury's pioneering Deans family for 91 years.

No wonder Ockors call NZ.......

The shaky Isles.

A magnitute 6.4 earthquake hit 90 km north of White Island yesterday, 29th Sept 2010..

GNS Science said it would have been felt as far north as Auckland and as far south as Wellington.

Gisborne residents felt what they are calling a good little jolt.

The quake had a focal depth of 280km and struck at 5:14pm.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

It was the second largest record quake in New Zealand this year after the 7.1 quake which struck Canterbury on September 4. <BR clear=none>

island_3012_2.jpg

Sitting 48 km offshore, White Island (Whakāri) is one of New Zealand's most active cone volcanoes which has been built up by continuous volcanic activity over the past 150,000 years.

About 70 percent of the volcano is under the sea, making this massive volcanic structure one of the largest in New Zealand.

"Where have all the earthquakes gone?

They've gone to Canterbury, every one."

Well, so it seems.......

Canterbury residents were last night shaken awake by two big aftershocks - exactly a month after the devastating 7.1 earthquake.

The first quake - magnitude 5 and centred 30km east of Darfield - was felt throughout the South Island, including Hokitika and Timaru, at 10.21pm.

The second, magnitude 4 and centred 20km east of Darfield, struck eight minutes later.

Must be nerve wracking living thereabouts.

There have been more than 1000 aftershocks in the past month.

Dunno if this will work....

If it's a new quake in a different place why is it still called an aftershock?

To put things in perspective... because the Richter Scale is a base 10 logarithmic scale, each successive number on the Richter scale indicates a ten-fold increase in seismic energy.....thus the magnitude 7 last month was 1000 times more powerful than this magnitude 4 aftershock.

This photo was taken at a trade show in Guangzhou, last week, by Paul Armistead.

It was part of a world map put together by a Malaysian company.

"Maybe the earthquake was a little bigger than we thought!".

Bloody Gillard !!

Couldn't use East Timor, so she's moved NZ to Christmas Island to store all the boat refugees.
