Mohammed Is Now The Most Popular Name In Uk

If you can't believe the Daily Mail, how about CNN International?

No thanks. I prefer to get my information from sources whose biases I know and whose agendas I understand. Who is Pew? Who funds them? What right do they have to say that they are independent? I ask these questions because I've never heard of them in the UK before.

I've always been a little bemused by the mainly black penchant for unique names. Rihanna, Lawanda, Beyonce etc.

They are not all that unique as lots of black folks use the same ones. There are about a million Latanza(s). :whistling:

I've always liked Jack and Danny........................................(sorry)

Isn't Chuck a variation on Charles?

In the same way that Jack is a variation on John.

Really? I thought Jack was a name in it's own right whereas Chuck was a nik name for Charles. Learn something new every day.

Chuck is a nickname for Charles.

Which would make Latanza not odd at all........what's your point?

Who names their child after a nickname? Or, stranger still, a derivative of a nickname?

Back in the 1980's at my place of work we hired this kid named Billy. I filled out his paperwork and put his first name in the system as William since Billy is a derived from William. When he tried to cash his first paycheck I got a call from the bank asking me to verify who he was. It turns out his mom named him Billy, not William. That was the first time I ever encountered someone naming their kid a nickname.

I've always been a little bemused by the mainly black penchant for unique names. Rihanna, Lawanda, Beyonce etc. We get it here in NZ too, but somewhat odder as the Maori trend is for names after something... Castille, Jaguar,...I know some twins named Starsky and Hutch (honest!), and there is reputedly a set of twins named Benson and Hedges..... babies named after the place of conception are not unusual eg A;bert Park, Valiant (a car model), Scotland, Qantas ( parents must be mile high club members ;) ).

I googled "odd baby names" and came a cross a list that I thought the compiler must have had a fairly narrow life experience because she/he included in the "top 100 unique baby girl names" Matilda, Shiraz, Daniela, Mikaela, and Aisla....which I think are not all that uncommon, in fact I think they may be quite traditional in some cultures.

Just goes to show.....odd is in the eye of the beholder.

Odd is also in the eye of the employer.

Here's more from the link I posted for those who don't like following links:

What kind of parent is most likely to give a child such a distinctively black name? The data offer a clear answer: an unmarried, low-income, undereducated, teenage mother from a black neighborhood who has a distinctively black name herself. Giving a child a super-black name would seem to be a black parent's signal of solidarity with her communitythe flip side of the "acting white" phenomenon. White parents, meanwhile, often send as strong a signal in the opposite direction. More than 40 percent of the white babies are given names that are at least four times more common among whites.

So, what are the "whitest" names and the "blackest" names? Click here for the top 20 each for girls and here for the top 20 each for boys. (For the curious, we've also put together a list of the top 20 crossover namesthe ones that blacks and whites are most likely to share.) And how much does your name really matter? Over the years, a series of studies have tried to measure how people perceive different names. Typically, a researcher would send two identical (and fake) résumés, one with a traditionally white name and the other with an immigrant or minority-sounding name, to potential employers. The "white" résumés have always gleaned more job interviews. Such studies are tantalizing but severely limited, since they offer no real-world follow-up or analysis beyond the résumé stunt.

The California names data, however, afford a more robust opportunity. By subjecting this data to the economist's favorite magic tricka statistical wonder known as <A href="http://www.slate.com/id/2116449/sidebar/2116471/">regression analysisit's possible to tease out the effect of any one factor (in this case, a person's first name) on her future education, income, and health.

The data show that, on average, a person with a distinctively black namewhether it is a woman named Imani or a man named DeShawndoes have a worse life outcome than a woman named Molly or a man named Jake. But it isn't the fault of his or her name. If two black boys, Jake Williams and DeShawn Williams, are born in the same neighborhood and into the same familial and economic circumstances, they would likely have similar life outcomes. But the kind of parents who name their son Jake don't tend to live in the same neighborhoods or share economic circumstances with the kind of parents who name their son DeShawn. And that's why, on average, a boy named Jake will tend to earn more money and get more education than a boy named DeShawn. DeShawn's name is an indicatorbut not a causeof his life path.

That is exactly my point.

Yes.

To twist this into the lefty gene thread.....It possibly extends to indicators of genetics, too. The child named DeShawn inherits the genes of parents that would name a child De Shawn.

How many right wing warmongers had parents that named their son River, or their daughter India Summer?

Only the ones who did too much acid in college.

Would that be the majority or the minority of rightwing warmongers? You will probably find a common gene amongst teenage drug experimenters, and another gene common amongst drug addicts....just as the less personable, or the less intelligent, may have, or may lack, certain genes in common.

I'll bite. How many?

Yes, that 'common gene' among teenage drug experimenters and addicts, which happens to be the topic of another thread, is better known as the Liberal Gene.

The village idiot Texan did some experimentation in his youth, didn't he? Yet he is no lefty. I wonder what went wrong with him.

Oh no!!!! Don't tell me YOU have been reduced to silly one liners and an accompanying picture!

An appropriate one liner and an accompanying picture are almost classic literature compared to the pointless, paranoid rantings of some of our more frequent left-wing contributers.

The gene cannot exist in a vacuum.

Or maybe he had a transplant (sorry, excision) before running for political office. And Haliburton can do marvels in oil + gas engineering, so why not genetic engineering?

Edit: Sorry, forgot it was Haliburton who fuc_ked up the platform fire and later recovery engineering in the Gulf of Mexico and caused all the pollution panic through the spring and summer, then blamed BP.

"Almost classic literature".

Wow. I'm a little taken aback.

I now know where NOT to buy books on the reccomendation of the proprietor.

You didn't mention the faulty cement that they persisted in using even though it was shown to be faulty.....you also didn't mention (directly) the relationship between Haliburton and Bush.

I do not believe that the two personas are one and the same in reality, albeit they both have some flaws in common. :whistling:

If do not bother to read whole sentences in context, you probably would not appreciate a book "reccomendation" (sic) anyway. happy0199.gif

Please provide your understanding of the "relationship between Haliburton and Bush."

I always liked Elvis although Ali was a great Mohanned.

Bushs' vice-president was once the CEO of Haliburton, and Haliburton got most of the contracts during the wars. I don't like it as a first name..

An anti-war friend of mine in the investment fund biz told me years ago that it made sense that Haliburton got the contracts that they did because no one else could do the job.

Of course, Bush-Cheney KNEW that they would one day invade Iraq so they started building the company up to be in a unique position!

Bush's vice president also divested himself of any and all Halliburton stock before he became VP.

Next excuse.
