Pot Holes In Road Surface In Front Of Simon Caberet

Very deep pot holes in the main road in front of one of the major attractions for tourists on the island.

[ Simon Caberet] and with each passing day getting deeper.as more vehicles drop in the holes, forcing more filling out, plus due to the constant water, flowing down the hill and across the surface, covering the hazard, making it invisible. Yesterday i was returning to kata from Patong, and was being 'harried to get out of the way'.

by one of those white mini buses, they think they are kings of the road, always speeding, they get upset when fully loaded with passengers

if you impede passage way , also when empty. I was unable to cross to my right . and avoid the holes that i knew were there, but could not see.

a the Mini bus was trying to overtake, even with traffic coming down the hill i dropped my left front wheel in a hole and felt the truck falter. i thought, there goes my suspension. i might lose a wheel. How ever, as i had been forced to stop, the mini thingy shot out, and on a high note, dropped its front wheels into holes i saw the idiot.'s shocked face, as he dropped his windows. I smiled sweetly . and said som nan na .

I would like to see on Phuket island. that which i belong to, in chiangmai. municiple volunteers,[ Chiang Mai friends] where like minded thais and forigners. join together to help the city and province. Phuket friends or municiple volunteers could solve most of the things. that go un heeded on this island ,just a lot of lip service. I know there are guys and girls on this island who have the individual knowledge to tackle and solve stuff like this . Please dont degenerate this post about work permits etcs. we would lead by example. And as in Chiangmai all work is done with permission . And yes l ilove seven eleven ,one can travel accross Thailand and survive

but we do need volunteers to pick un the discarded msip ha sipbottles and beer botlles plus all the other stuff, there is an inability to use a trash bin. Today is also international aid awareness day, love can kill unless we all take care Riley 76

And beware the entrance to Central Car Park on the by-pass side

the drain cover has broken 20 yds above the entrance and the dip is enough to break a wheel if you are not aware.

Those potholes outside Simon Caberet have been there in various forms for years along with the water feature :whistling: Someone should call the mayor or his son. After reading about the Mayors son and his plans for Patong you would think fixing a few potholes would be easy. The roads in Phuket in many places are nothing short of a disgrace given the amount of money tourists bring in to this province.

Why should volunteers do the work that corrupt and shiftless Government officials should be doing. The Mayor is quick to tell everybody about his new 700 room hotel and his various other businesses but who is he serving, himself or the people of Patong?

This is just so typical, a person buys himself an official rank so he can run and expand his businesses free of any restraints.

His son wants to turn Patong into another Singapore or Hong Kong whatever that means. This in a place where nobody can even fix one pothole. B)

The constant stream of water is ridiculous.

There is no drains before the construction of those tasteless hotels and condos, especially the purple one.rolleyes.gif

Simon Caberet's failed concrete eyesore development opposite are an absolute scar and the construction of those townhomes heading up the hill towards safari club is horrible.

I can't stand that whole area.

That whole area is turning into a wasteland with hundreds of low cost apartments being built. No tourists will rent these places in a concrete jungle. Eventually they'll be rented by local workers for low rents and the whole area will just decay. The road to the waterfall in Kathu used to be very quiet and natural. Last time I went down there it was full of low cost houses and apartments. Nobody seems capable of building anything that looks nice and has adequate parking and gardens.

I think someone actually filled a few of the potholes along 3rd road a few days ago. :o

Filling potholes with crushed rock and patting it down with a shovel isn't going to last long. The roads around the beach at Bang Tao and Cherng Talay are woeful. The only good roads are in Laguna or the road to Nai Thon. Laguna at least seem to set high standards in their buildings.

A Thai friend of mine is an electrician. He has done work at some really upmarket places in Surin and Bang Tao. He says the workmanship in these places is really bad.

He said most of it is done by Burmese and a lot of maintainence is required to fix everything from rotting woodwork to peeling paint and leaking roofs.

He said he did some work at for an Italian family who had paid big money for a villa, they said the workmanship was real bad and pointed out all the faults to him. I live near Amanpuri and see all the Burmese workers waiting at the bottom of the hill for their lift home. They are all working on some high end villas near Chedi and Amanpuri.

You never see that in the glossy brochures or websites do you. "Nestled on a private idyllic plot this exclusive villa was painstakingly built by our specialist team of Burmese lackeys............. :o

Fixing those pot holes will never last until they correct the natural drainage there and that would be very expensive. Unfortunately, as some who've been here for a while know, it dry's up during dry spells. Even in the west it's sometimes difficult to things like that fixed. Being near a major tourist attraction and through way for all the people heading to the pier seems like enough reason for a permanent fix but TIT.......

As I said in a previous post. (I will tread with caution as I am coming back from a suspension) They should make a new bridge there called "Sapahn Simon". They should name the river "Klong Patong" and "Sapahn loi Katoey" for the footbridge. Problem solved everyone's happy and no loss of face

I know you said that you didn't want anyone going on about work permit issues for your "volunteer army", but when some foreigner gets hauled over the coals for cleaning public bogs in Kamala in his own time with his own materials BUT without a work permit, then there's little point in any of us showing Community Spirit.

Like the poster said. If you do it officially and get permission first, you can't possibly run in to any problems.

Point taken - I did misread the bit about obtaining permission first.

However, that reminds of something I read in local media within the last week. Some US Navy guys were doing some community help beach cleaning ...... while the local males sat under the shade of a tree drinking beer and watching them.

On that basis, "charity begins at home", and we're frequently reminded that this is THEIR home, not ours.

That's a fairish point, and one that always comes up when people have talked on here in the past, of doing beach clean ups.

To me, the saying, 'cutting of your nose to spite your face' comes to mind. So the local Thais aren't interested, who cares. It's a bit of a childish attitude, 'well their not doing it, so why should I'. Too many people spend too much time worrying about other people. Why not do what you want to do. What you think is the right thing to do, what gives you some satisfaction. Why should the Thai people sitting under the tree change anything?

But real permission means a work permit.. There are no exceptions (unless your a police volunteer !!)..

And the WP has such convoluted rules, even for volunteering. Look what they did to the woman from the Soi Dog foundation when she spoke up against the government dog pound.

Have you ever (or any of your mates ;) ) approached the appropriate offical department, as a mixed group of Thais and Farang and asked for temporary, special permission to do some community service type work??

Didn't think so, and neither have I of course, so we don't really know what the outcome would be do we.

You have just said in another thread, how what laws are passed, and what officals say yes to, depends which way the wind blows. So why now (because it suits your argument, that's why) are you quoting the law as if it was written in stone. Who knows, the official department asked, might be desperate for some good PR and be happy to grant permission.

I can only agree 100%,i have hit the same place many times, driven around the island now is like a car testing coarse, Karon looked beautiful but now it looks like a demolition site, Rawia is the same, roads dug up everywhere, my friend can't even leave his own home because the road is missing outside his house, even the north of phuket is getting dug up. Someone must be held accountable for all this upheaval and inconvenience, if they would repair and leave the road in good order at least would be something and of coarse it has to be done in high and peak season.

I believe some of them have been filled but still leaves alot to be desired.. I can only understand that they may be holding out until some of the major works near the road are finished..

Today was the first time ever for many years that this part of the road was actually dry. Been a long long time since I've seen that. And yes, the potholes had been filled. Not that the patches will last long.

Halfway up the hill they have sandbagged the water flow to a drain.

It's a temporary fix but it's a start.

I was in Patong a few days ago and am always surprised at the pace of building there, I think Thais are kidding themselves if they think everyone is going to make a living given the amount of places you have now. I saw the renovated Soi Sea dragon, looked nice but was desolute and empty.

Every second Thai I meet seems to have an inflated idea of the income of the average farang. For every high roller or offshore worker there is ten more people who are just wage earners on their two week holiday. A lot of the guys who do have money are the young tradies, these guys do better than most these days and do have a bit more than young families.

This idea the Thais have of attracting the rich is a bit of a joke to me. I remember meeting a German, his family owned two of the biggest hotels in Germany yet he lived a very modest lifestyle in Thailand. People who have worked hard for their money don't always just want to blow it. People on a two week break might let loose but you need a constant market of them that doesn't seem to be case at present.

I think if Thais concentrated on getting the infrastructure correct, make an effort to protect the environment and place some limits on building then just maybe Phuket will retain some of its appeal. Bangla has become like a suburban mall you find in every western city, if Thais think that's what brings farangs to Thailand they are missing the point.

Everyone I talk to wants that idyllic unspoilt tropical island feel you can only get out on the smaller islands now. Most of the people I talk to on the North west coast only go to Patong for a look or to buy cheap knock off clothes. The Mayor and his son seem to forget Patong was once a small beach resort with a bit of nightlife. This idea of turning it into a major city won't work as nobody will spend on the needed infrastructure.

The pot holes and water flowing on the road near Simon's is just one small example how even a small problem takes years to fix. If public works were completed as quickly as private developments were there wouldn't be too much to complain about. Let's see how quick the Mayor and his whiz kid son get their 700 room resort built. <_<
