Money Transfer Query

Featured Replies

Im looking at transfering money into a thai bank acct, could anyone advise me what the following bank number format means as it doesnt make sense to me.

Obviously this isnt the real number but what I have is like this...

012-3-45678-9

Will this format work from UK? Shouldnt there be an international sort code number?

Thanks

..that number is ok...it indicates also the branch of the bank...what you need more is the "swift code"..for example regarding Bangkok bank needs:

NAME-SURNAME

A/C NUMBER

BKKBTHBK (swift code)

..with this instruction your european will be able to send money here...no more than 5/6 days and your money will be in your thai bank (obviously in THB).

Hope it helps.

...ooops...I mean....with this instruction your european BANK will be..etc. etc.

I forget "BANK" in my previous post :o

Please try to obtain and write in the money transfer's note the exact name of the brach. Sometimes the swift (bic) code is referred to a district branch, especially when you're sending money in a small town (for example Ban Phe related to Rayong).

In these cases the trasnfer must be placed manually by the bank clerk, that's why indicating exact names and brach is useful.

Regards,

Gabriele.

AFAIK the first three digits of any bank account in Thailand is the branch number - the SWIFT code is normally only held at the main bank office in Bangkok and all distributions are done from there by the account number/name of account.

Falangman, if you transfer money via online banking (Telegraphic Transfer) the SWIFT CODE you insert will automatically fill in the corrosponding BANK details. You should also have an option to TT the amount in either Thai Baht or GPB. From Australia I always transfer Australian $'s. Because the exchange rate is then applied here (Thailand) and Australian Banks give ridiculously low rates. :o

Farangman: I have some experience in sending money to my Thai partner from Australia. I have used Western Union (quick, but a fee of about 7% applies - ouch!), sending cash through the mail (no problems yet - but mail takes about a week to get there), International Online Bank Transfer ($AUD35 fee and takes about a week).

My current method is the best. If you have a bank account which allows online access, open a bank account in your name for your Thai partner. Send them the ATM card in the mail. When they phone to advise they have received the card - give them the PIN by phone ... never send them an email with the number, nor post the PIN with the ATM card.

That way you can do what I do: Transfer funds from your main account to the ATM card which your partner has when you feel like it. Funds transfer is instantly done and I only incur a $AUD5 charge each time my partner accesses he account.

I can check the balance of all my accounts online 24/7.

Peter
