Sydney-Hobart is a great race.

Trouble is - there's a return leg.

Why don't they just keep heading South?

I don't think Boxing day was a very good one for a few thousand people in 2004.

totally agree ND old boy !

looks like the ashes will be safely locked away in their rightful home at lords in london for another 3 and a half years or so.

ricking " punter " ponting should have taken the greyhounds out for a run round the local track instead of turning up at the MCG.

Wasn't a great day, I found myself treading water in my Phuket hotel room.

So it's like a banking holiday, held every 3 weeks or so?

Boxing Day used to be the day when the tradesmen would come round to the back door, tip their capos to the housekeeper (or sometimes the lady of the house) say Gooday Ma'am and collect their tip for the year. (Christmas Box)

When I was waiting for Uni I did a few months working as a van delivery driver for Lipton's in Old Brompton Road - very near Harrods.

Was lucky enough to be delivering over Christmas and collected a real fortune. More than the official wages for a year. Then I left.

Lots of interesting customers that I delivered to - Leslie Caron, Margot Fonteyn, Michael Redgrave among them.

My mother use to tell me that boxing day was for all the naughty children who misbehaved for their mothers would have to 'box up' their christmas pressents and send them back to santa.

And I thought that Christmas presents were just 'loaners' for the day.

I'd speak to my mum about this, but she died in June.

Actually, Boxing day 2004 was a GOOD day for this Canuck. I was at Kao Lak on the 19th of December when my daughter in Canada asked me to come home for Christmas. I did so and it saved my life. The Thai family living on the beach where I was staying all disappeared that fateful morning.

As a child and a teenager, I always preferred Boxing Day to Christmas. My mother was a stickler for everything being "perfect" on Christmas, and consequently, everyone was up-tight trying not to do anything wrong. Boxing day we could all relax, play with our new gifts and eat left over turkey and ham.

Ahh, yes.

Boxing day - turkey salad

27th Dec - turkey sandwiches with lettuce/tomatoes

28th Dec - turkey sandwiches

29th Dec - turkey soup with dumplings, flavoured with stuffing

30th Dec - turkey soup with potatoes

31st Dec - told to wait for New Year.

What about the turkey croquettes?

What about the turkey croquettes?

Nope.

Used to eat a lot of fish-cakes at other times of the year, but can't remember turkey croquettes.

The main thing I remember about Christmas dinner was having to go out in the garden, snow or frost thick on the ground, and pick brussels sprouts. Dozens of them. All frozen solid and you can't do it with gloves on.

Ahh, how I loved Christmas.
